Cello
Resonator
There is an ingenious alternative to
the standard wolf eliminator called a resonator. It's a rubber piece
that attaches to the front of the cello (either w/ putty or
permanently from the inside). They are actaually for specific tone
ranges. Right now, I am trying to locate on for e to F#. Any
suggestions as to where I might find them? I've checked Shar,
Southwest Strings, Music City Strings, Concord Music Supplies, and
all of the obvious suspects.
Thanks!

Re:
Cello Resonator
I remember reading that Gewa makes
them (or, at least something along the same lines)... and that your
best bet in getting them is just to ask your local luthier.
Sorry I'm not more help than that...

Hmmm... my wolf tone is on the F#
also... Does anyone know if wolf tones are more common on certain
notes than others on the cello?

Re:
Cello Resonator
Quinn Violins has 'em, check out the
website. They're in the "Makers' Aisle" section under
"miscellaneous." Both the internal and external resonators are
listed.

I ordered one from Quinn. They were
incredibly helpful (the information on the website was a bit
misleading, so I left a voicemail message and they called back; they
even said that I could try it and return it if it doesn't work,
because they don't have the high range one for f to g, which is what
I seem to need, but they think that the middle range one, from e to
f# should do the trick).
I still can't believe how expensive
they are for what they are ($46 dollars including shipping!), but if
it works as well as it has for my Mom, it will be worth it!
Especially since I have a concert coming up for which a good solid g
harmonic is essential!

You're welcome, my pleasure! I need
one of them too, but haven't gotten around to ordering one yet. Do
you have any idea how difficult it'll be to find out where to affix
it to your cello??

Finding
the "W" spot
The Gewa resonators come with a
rather decent set of directions. Unfortunately they are in German
although there are a couple of pictures to help you figure it out.
The "ookum" that allows you to mount it to the outside of the cello
is simply for temporary locating purposes only. The intent is for
the device to be mounted permanently to the inside of the cello at
the spot where the graduation is too thin and, thus, where the wolf
really lives. Gluing the resonator to the inside of the cello is a
shop task which is not easily done at home. Therefore, it is not
really an after-market device but rather a true luthier's supply
item. Finding the spot where it is to go requires either a lot of
patience or two people. One of these days, when I have a lot of time
to kill, I will do a write-up of how I figure out where to put a
resonator. But not today. Sorry.

External/Internal Resonators
You know, Dick, my impression from
the Quinn (?) site is that there are both internal and external
resonators available.
Anyone have experience w/the external
resonators? What do they look like on the cello?

Re:
External/Internal Resonators
From the description provided on the
Quinn website, the external resonator is more like the traditional
wolf eliminator, in that it mounts on the strings, which is a royal
pain.
My Mom has had the "internal" resonator mounted
externally with the putty for several years now, and it works great
that way. It's my plan to leave mine that way, too.
