Parents at Lessons
How many educators here teach children whose parents attend lessons?

How do you feel about it?

Does it cause any problems?

Re: Parents at Lessons
I usually have parents of small children (12 and under) at lessons. I think it's a great thing.

One of my most talented student's mother came to all the lessons and sometimes I could swear she was taking the lesson more than Jeffery was!

But the results were evident. He was 7-8 years old and his mother would remind of many things I taught him during lessons. By the next lesson he always mastered anythying new I taught him in regards to left or right hand positioning or technique.

A very involved (carefully, though) parent can be an asset to their student's progress. But then again, some who are too invloved in the wrong way can actually do the opposite.

Parents at lessons
I don't mind parents at lessons, but prefer to give the first one WITHOUT parents, unless it's a young student. I think you need a lesson or two alone with a student to develop that report. After that, it really depends on the parent and student; some parents can be distracting or interrupt too much. I take it on an individual basis...

parents at lessons.......
Hi,
I donīt think itīs a good idea to have parents in the lessons. You will always teach different if parents are present, because you are not totally free in your reactions. Of course itīs a problem if you have parents who have nothing to do with the cello, or with instrumental playing or - the worst case- with music at all. But in these cases Iīd prefer to take a couple of minutes in each lesson to explain certain aspects to the parent and do the rest with the student alone.
2 of my daughters study cello and violin for 1 year, and both teachers donīt have us with them, - I think itīs good,
and both children like it that way. Ask your students how they feel about it! From my experience as a "cello-child" I would have hated to have my parents with me, - youīd never get a chance to "cheat" for instance if you havenīt practised the whole week but for some reason you play really well, your teachers compliments you and then your mother says: "......but he didnīt practise the whole week...." Imagine how that feels..........
Well, my father is a cellist too, so this might be even worse. - Would be an interesting topic: How do you feel about being taught by someones parents ? My father did of course, but I always had another "principal teacher" and thatīs the way I do it with my daughter.

.....expecting lots of reactions to this really interesting topic,
Mathias
