Locatelli Sonata
Well I knew I'd be asking this
question again. In 10 years, this is the 3rd time I've attempted it
and I finally feel like I have the nerve to program it on a recital
2 weeks from now.
I know some of you have played it before so
maybe you can give me some input.
1. Stacatto in the 1st
movement - It's not all that difficult until you have to play it a
bit slower. Why is that?
2. Tempi - How do you find Starkers
Tempi? I think his 2nd mvment is perfect. The last mvmnt sounds
great too, but it feels a bit fast. It really has to be perfectly in
tune to sound good at that speed (well, at any speed
really)
3. Harmonics in third movement - in the 2nd variation
and the last- any tips on getting them to ring like a bell? (yes,
like Starker does)
TIA to all you masters of the cello for
your input!

OK, how
about this one?
Besides Starker's recording of this
Sonata, do you have or have you heard of any other ones that you
like?
I have an old radio recording of Robert Cohen playing
it live. It's not bad, but not played with the grace and ease of
Starker.
I seem to remember a Shafran Recording and his
machine-gun like stacatto.
What else is out there? Is there
anything noteworthy?

Locatelli
Paul, I have a recording of Andre
Navarra on the Locatteli dating from the 1960's. I think it is
amazing. From memory, there is a lot of finger percussion on the
sound track............but I remember that the closing section is
totally incredible. I have just tried to find it in my collection -
but alas, things have got out of order again!! I'll let you know
details of the CD later his weekend. Keith

Thanks for the info on the Shafran
Recording, which I do happen to have. Have you ever compared it with
Starker's? What do you think?

Locatelli
Keith,
That's fascinating! I
hope you find it soon. I'd love to hear it. There are so few
recordings of this work, so any made are important.
Let us
know when/if you find it!
Thanks!

Navarra/Locatelli
Paul, I found it........... CD
number Cal 9673 - Calliope Label. It dates from 1982 - which is much
lter than I thought. The Locatelli is along with 2 Bocherini
sonatas, Valentini, Nin, Granados and De Falla. The Locatelli is in
2 movements Allegro and then Adagio & Minuetto. It is a gem of a
CD and I have played it quite a lot in the past. I was right about
the finger percussion.......quite a bit can be heard on the first
movement of the Locatelli. But I just love the end of the
sonata.............those high register string crossings with
harmonics and then the downward chromatic run to the last
chord..........wow! Navarra was indeed a great player. I wish you
all the very best in your performance..I'd love to be able to play
this work. Best regards Keith
