Twangy
G string
Sounds like the name of an exotic
dancer :-) It's actually a rattley G string, but then I couldn't
make a joke.
My new cello has a set of hellicores and the G
string (and to a lesser extent C string) rattles against the
fingerboard when I play loudly in the lower positions. Pizzicato is
very rattley no matter how careful I am.
The clearance at the
end of the fingerboard is 3/16" which sound like it should be OK.
Also, the clearance in front of the nut looks OK (there's no rattle
playing an open string).
Does anybody have any
suggestions?

My guess is, maybe your fingerboard
needs to be planed. Or, the strings are set too close to the
fingerboard. I have the same strings, and can pluck them with a big
"bong", with no rattling. Can you tell where about they are touching
the fingerboard when they rattle? Sorry, but I'm not sure of the
standard string clearence range.

Re:
Twangy G string
3/16'ths is incredibly low for the 2
bottom strings. I don't know the exact measurements that luthiers
use, but I think it's a lot closer to 3/8ths of an inch, or maybe
higher. My cello is around 3/8ths. Plus you need to have your
fingerboard planed correctly - you can have your strings a lot lower
if the fingerboard is planed with the right curvature.

Re:

The clearance on the C string side
should be 7-8 mm (or 0.275-0.31 inch - yikes, don't ask me what that
is in fractional inches...thank goodness we use the metric system in
Canada!) and on the A string side 5.7 mm. At 3/16 of an inch you are
more in the range of 4.8mm which is too low. It will depend somewhat
on the type of string you use too, as some of the smaller diameter
strings (tungsten) will have a greater amplitude of vibration and
may require more clearance.
