Aaron...
Hey, was that you posting about
audition pieces on maestronet? I plan to audition for the university
orchestra in october, too so maybe we can share some thoughts. I'm
currently playing the Beethoven sonatina in D minor. It's mostly
tenor clef with some bass clef. It's a little beyond fourth position
but no thumb position. It gave me a hard time for two weeks but
after that it was really nice to play (my first piece in tenor
clef).

Audition pieces
Yup! That was me! We've been playing
for a roughly equal amount of time, haven't we? November '99? I'll
have to check out that Beethoven piece. Is it accompanied? I am
almost positive that I need an unaccompanied piece for my audition.
I haven't played anything in tenor clef yet, either, but I might as
well jump in and try, huh?
Any other pieces that I should check out anybody?
Aaron
P.S. Michele- My teacher was very pleased with
my playing the Breval Sonata. She has, I think, played it in the
past and/or had a student who played it, so she was very familiar
with the piece, which helps.

Yes, I started on November 4th '99. I'm
glad you liked the Breval sonata. I currently play it again (and
much better than before!). I checked the website of the
university orchestra and it doesn't say that the piece must be for
solo cello. Do you think it's okay to play a sonata without
piano? I think for solo cello there is not to much besides the
bach suites. In the shar catalog I found also 'Six Caprices' by
Servais (ASTA rating 4). But they have listed the Beethoven sonatina
as 3 so 4 might be really something big to chop down. Maybe we
should start a new post and ask about audition pieces?

Wonderful idea! A spin-off thread!
I'll make another one.

By the way, I've been playing a whole three
days longer than you have!

Beethoven Sonatina?
I would be interested in learning
the publisher, etc. for this. I think it's a little beyond me today,
but I'm inching closer. A quick on-line search seemed to only show
piano pieces as Beethoven "sonatinas." Perhaps it's an arrangement?
Part of a collection?

Re:
Beethoven sonatina
I currently play (actually sent it
on vacation for a few days) the Beethoven sonatina in D minor
(Edition Peters). It's Cello + Piano. My teacher let me chose if
I want to play that sonatina or a Romberg sonata. I simply refused
to play the Romberg sonata <g>

There is a lovely collection of
sonatinas by Haydn, Mozart Beethoven and Schubert available. It is
published by Edition Misica Budapest: Z13 130.
It contains
transcriptions of 7 sonatinas by these classical composers. Although
they are accessible to intermediate students, I also find them
useful for more advanced students to expand their understanding of
classical style.

Hmm. Sounds like it's time for
another shopping trip to Pender's music! Maybe
tomorrow, while my dad and I are out trying new pianos.

Thanks
Yes, we were looking over a Romberg
sonata at my last lesson. It's nearly time to take another small
leap forward into the unknown
Thanks again,
Dave

Aaron - Let me know if you can't
find that collection. I have a copy you could borrow.

wow! You just have everything, don't
you?!? I
didn't go sheet music shopping last weekend like I planned on doing.
We ended up buying a piano, so I thought it best to not ask my
parents to buy some music for me.
By
the way, how is your quartet concept coming along? I was thinking
about that the other day.
(I'm assuming that you are the same
Janet that used to go by JanJan? I hope so. If not then I'm making
an utter fool of myself.
)

Hi Aaron,
Yes, it's me. Well
my quartet is floundering. We're having lots of troubles getting
together. But I have faith that someday it will happen.
So
can you use the sonatina collection? E-mail my your address if you
can. How's the new piano?

Prayer is the answer to everything!!
That's my
coin phrase for life.
I thought about arranging a version of
the hymn "Take My Life and Let it Be..." for string quartet the
other day, and I think that's what made me remember you talking
about your quartet.
As
for the Sonatina collection, I'm going to go music shopping this
weekend, assuming that I have gas in my car and my parents give me
money to buy music. All my spare money these days is going toward my
school's choir trip, which I am about $300 behind in payments!!!
Unfortunately, the piano is not yet here. We are buying it
with the money that we are getting from the sale of my grandmother's
house. She died two years ago, and we fixed up her house and sold
it. Even though the new owners are already living in the house, it
is still on probate. So we don't have the money yet to pay for the
piano, but as soon as we get the check in, we're getting the piano
delivered.
