Sheet
music retail locations
Bobbie suggested we needed one new
topic, so I'm contributing another. Do those of you who live in
different parts of the country find that sheet music stores are a
dying breed? We had a nice one locally that closed last year. It was
sad, but no big surprise; it was smack in the middle of Palo Alto,
the center of Silicon Valley, and it could no longer pay
rent.
But in November my wife and I went up to the big store
in San Francisco (Andy Victor will know the place I mean) where
you've always been able to find everything: solo pieces, opera
scores, orchestral parts, little band books, you name it. They were
having a sale, but it looked like a clearance sale; there seemed to
be very little there. All the staff assured us that the store wasn't
going out of business, but it sure looked that way.
I asked
the music teacher at school about this and she said many schools now
order online (e.g., from Pepper) because it's faster and more
reliable. I suppose that's okay, but online or phone orders just
can't provide some experiences. I always enjoy looking through
what's there, even things I'll never play. In a store, you also get
the twin but opposite emotions of looking at a piece you've wanted
to play and either realizing to your surprise that it might now be
within reach or is not quite yet a possibility. For that matter,
nothing beats finding an unexpected arrangement for your instrument
of a piece you like.
Now it looks as though we're headed to
either phone orders exclusively or relying on the tender mercies of
instrument stores--which (since they rarely specialize in cellos!)
are going to have a limited selection for us. Recently I asked for
and got advice from CBNrs about a sheet music purchase by mail--I
guess it's fortunate that we have a new way to communicate just at a
time we really need it because old ways of getting information
(going into the store and looking around) may no longer be
available.

Re:
Sheet music retail locations
We in Seattle have a dearth of sheet
music stores, which is a major annoyance. (!!! There's my new
career!!!) I end up mail-ordering all of mine, which is OK, it's
always fun to get a package at work, but it must be great to be able
to pore over things in a store.

Mary, Isn't Johnson-West still
in business? The one under the monorail tracks by the Center?
Another place is the University Bookstore...

Re:
Sheet music retail locations - to Ruthann
Hi, Ruthann, no, Johnson-West is
long gone. We have a place now called "Capitol Music" (which may be
J-W under a different name, for all I know). CapMus is OK but not
great, frequently when I go up there looking for something not too
obscure, it isn't in stock. They offer to order it but heck, usually
it'll come from Sheet Music Service in Portland OR faster than if
they order it.

Thanks, Terry! You are quite a
fountain of information. Do you just know all this stuff or are you
really good at doing computer searches?

Indeed he is. I like to think of him
as
"The Referencemeister."

Gosh
thanks! *blushing*
Referencemeister...I like that
one!
I wish I knew all this information, but I find most of
it searching the net. I enjoy helping when I can. My working life
has been largely in R&D and I guess some of this approach comes
with that territory. I have never been one to keep a lot of detail
in my head and so my process is a more intuitive approach to knowing
how and where to find information. I also have a good music library
that I refer to often.
