Practice time when at college/university
I don't start for another 4 weeks
(counting the days ) but I
was wondering when do you cello-majors do the majority of your
practice, and how much you did when 1st year performance
students?
It it my intention to try to get some practice done
before lectures start at 9am - arriving at the School early in the
morning, and then try to do all my practice at School, so I can
concentrate on academic things at home. There is also the question
of fitting in practice on 2 instruments.
This doesn't sound
very cogent, but I have nobody else to ask at the
moment.
Thanks in advance!

Re:

I practice when I have time: between
morning and afternoon classes, evenings, a lot of late late nights,
weekends. Sometimes I'll only forty minutes between activities, just
enough time to snag a practice room, tune, warm up a little and run
through an etude or a few scales.
I've heard that with
academic study, it helps to study in the same place and relative
same time all the time. It helps to program your brain that when you
are in that room and that time, study is the name of the game. I
would imagine that the same goes for musical practice. Some people
are naturally more awake and alert in the mornings, so morning
practice is probably a good idea. For some, like me, it's exactly
the opposite. I think if it were possible, I'd probably be
nocturnal. A musician's working nights is perfect for
me!
I'll also point out that some people are more suited to
hour-long practice intervals several times a day, as opposed to one
four-hour session with a few short breaks. I find that, unless I'm
on a post-test adrenaline rush, I can only take at most 1.5 hours
before I have to do something else for ten or fifteen minutes. Find
out what works best for you.

Re:

I try to get up at 6:30
every morning and start my practice at school at 7. I usually have
lesson at 9:30. I try to work for one hour and then take a longer
break (20-30 minutes) and then start work again. When we're
rehearsing for a concert with the school orchestra, we usually start
at 10 and work until 3:30 in the afternoon. Those days I don't warm
up, I try to get as much sleep as I possibly can because I know
there's going to be a lot of hard work. This week we did Brahms
Hungarian Dances No. 5 & 10, Kodály, Háry János-Suite and Brahms
#4. Next time (March 5 to 10) we're doing Tchaikovskij, Capriccio
Italien, Stravinskij's Ode and Schostakovich #10. I don't practice
during the orchestra weeks. I find it difficult to get enough
time to practice, because there's always some lesson that get in the
way. I guess I do most of my practice in the afternoons and
evenings.

Shostakovich #10
Along with any Mahler, Shos. #10 is
my favourite symphony, except the 'noodle fingers' in Mvt. 2
!!!!!!!!!

Schostakovich
I love his music, I've had the
chance to play some great chamber music by Schostakovich. I've
played the e minor trio and the cello sonata. At the moment we're
doing Schostakovich #8 with our string quartet, we're playing it in
a concert at our school Feb. 14.
I must say...I haven't
heard Schostakovich Symphony
#10...
