How do I pick a teacher?
My son is taking lessons through his school right now and I would like to continue in the summer. I asked his band teacher and she said she couldn't recommended anyone. She has only lived here about 6mons and doesn't feel strong enough about any single teacher to send people to them.

So I was wondering how to interview a teacher? What should I ask? What are the signs of somebody to avoid? Are there certian styles that in your opinion are not good for beginners?

when you look for a teacher, i recommend you to listen to his/her pupils, and watch how they play. are they happy when they play? are their postures all right? how do they sound?

i think for a child it is very important to have good playing posture. straight backs, straight bows, rounded fingers in cello hand etc. many adults play with flat fingers f.ex., but i think growing child should avoid that. a good teacher cares for his pupils health by demanding a good playing posture.

also playing should be always joyous for the beginner. i would put musical performance only after these. when youre older you can learn musicality, but if youre not happy you will quit playing, and if you are "playing hurt" your cello career will be short or at least painful.
