NY
Cello Society event, Feb. 12
In my "capacity" as a Board member
of the New York Cello Society, I've decided that unless anyone
*strenuously* objects, I'll post a notice when we have an event
coming up, which is three or four times a year. That way, if anyone
living in or visiting the NYC area can't attend, it won't be because
they didn't know about it - from *this* forum, anyway!
Our
next event is on Mon., Feb. 12 at 8 p.m., and is called "Alan
Shulman at 85 - a Celebration in Performance and Recordings." The
printed flyer doesn't have a bio of Shulman, but I know that he was
a very prominent and influential cellist and composer in NYC for
many decades, and was in the Stuyvesant Quartet, which I believe
recorded on Nonesuch. (Ages ago, back in the 1960's, I bought the
sheet music to his "Homage to Erik Satie" for cello and piano, which
is sort of like the Gymnopedies - published by Schirmer - I still
have it!)
The program has been put together largely by his
son, the cellist Jay Shulman, who will open the concert with a
performance of Alan Shulman's Serenade for Cello and Piano (1941),
with Doris Stevenson, Piano. That's followed by the Suite for Solo
Cello (1951) played by Barbara Stein Mallow. Then a series of his
recorded performances as cellist will be played. And finally,
Stephen Kates and Doris Stevenson will play the first movement of
his Cello Concerto. There will be a reception afterward.
The
event will be held at the Kosciuszko Foundation, 15 E. 65th St. in
Manhattan, and admission is free for Cello Society members, $5 for
non-members. For information, or to join, please contact Esther
Prince, who handles *all* membership matters and publicity. Her
office phone is (212) 586-5052, fax (212) 586-6734, and the address
is 340 W. 55th St., #5D, NY 10019. Sorry, no e-mail - Esther doesn't
"do" computers - different generation, different Weltanschauung!
Anyway, come one, come all!
-Nick

Sigh, I miss NYC!
Nick, please give my warmest regards to Stephen Kates (my
teacher from Peabody).
Thanks!

Kates
I took some lessons with Nick Rosen
a few years ago in the summer. He and Kates were fellow students of
Piatigorsky. Rosen said of Kates "He's cornered the market on
sound."
Kates plays on a gorgeous sounding Montagnana but he
sounds great even on a plywood factory cello! You are in for a
treat.
Again, if you speak to him. Give him my best regards!
Thanks!

Re:
Rosen and shoes...
(whoops, I thought you typed Nate
Rosen instead of Nick; this blurb is in reference to Nathaniel
Rosen)
Rosen is a shoe guy. Or at least he was at one of his
concerts some ten-odd years ago. My parents took me to one of
Rosen's recitals in the Detroit area and I sat in the front row. As
some of you may know, I'm Emelda Marcos, Jr., and funky is all I
care about when I buy shoes. The ones I wore to the recital were no
exception. When the recital was over, my parents made me say hello
to Mr. Rosen, and he said "Oh! I remember you! You're the one with
the shoes! I watched your feet the whole time!" I was quite confused
until he explained that he usually picked something to focus on
while he played, and my funky shoes were it.
Cellists are
such interesting people.

Re:

By Nick Rosen, I meant Nathaniel
Rosen. I don't know why but somehow I've referred to him as Nick
Rosen for a long time. I must have read somewhere that his friends
call him that.
What's up with your shoes anyway? What was so
funky about them?

I don't remember exactly what they
looked like, but I do remember they weren't the average ten-year
old's shoes.
