Ahn
Trio
Has anyone here heard of the Ahn
Trio? If you haven't, you really need to get ahold of their stuff.
They are a really awesome piano trio (piano, violin, and cello).
It's three sisters and they are sooo good!! They recently visited
Missouri and played a concert in Jesse Hall which I was fortunate
enough to go to. They have a few CDs out, one being Ahn-plugged. It
has a lot of contemporary music on it, there's some Bernstein and
Piazzolla if that means anything to anyone. They have one song
called Diamond World that is gorgeous! Eric Ewazen composed it for
them. They also play classical music. I just wanted to post this up,
just in case anyone hadn't heard of them and was looking for some
good music. Thanx!!

I was stand partners with the
cellist in that trio (Maria?) while at Juilliard. She's very
talented!
Eric Ewazen! Now there was a fun theory (L&M)
teacher! He wrote a cool cello sonata too. Anyone who's taken his
classes will remember his fun triad memorization exercises where you
say as quickly as you can: c-e-g, c-e-g, c-e-g, d-f-a, d-f-a, d-f-a,
e-g-b, e-g-b, e-g-b and so on.

Re: Ahn

I was at that concert as well!
Didn't you think that, at the start of the second half when the
violinist said "I'd like to ask a favor...," she was going to tell
everyone to stop clapping between movements!
In all honesty I
wasn't blown away by them, but that's okay. Their ensemble was very
tight, and they really enjoyed playing for people, and that's what
matters.

Ok, for one, I would just like to
say that is soooo cool that you were stand partners with her! I went
to the open rehearsal before the concert and they are all really
nice people. We got to ask questions and really get to know them. It
was a lot of fun. I think that made the concert even better. Yeah,
the whole clapping between movements thing got on my nerves, but
what can ya do? I agree that they enjoy playing for people, they've
pretty much made that their life. And they look like they have fun.
Which is so cool.

They are playing at Troy Music Hall
this weekend. I don't know if I'm attending, but Stef was invited
and will be there. It seems to me they were former campers at
Luzerne Music Camp a while back though I'd need to check my facts.

Ahn Trio rules! I heard them cover
Tango by Piazzola on National Public Radio and I went out and bought
their CD. Another one of my favorite tracks is the theme from the
Piano. They are very talented artists.

Yeah,
I remember Maria as a
nice girl who was kind of quiet (maybe just around me, who knows?)
we did some operas at Juilliard as well as regular orchestal
repertoire.
It's cool that they've been marketed so
well.

Re: Ahn

They came to this orchestra festival
I was at about a year ago, promoting their new CD. I thought they
were on MTV, or were going to be on MTV, or something related to
MTV? I don't know. I also attended the masterclass with Maria Ahn,
but it wasn't that great. They are absolutely stunning, however!
They don't have to play...I could just stare at them. Ah, to be
beautiful!

to the
2 chicks here
I've been sitting on my hands for a
long time on this but now we have another chick. Perhaps you don't
realize how long women have tried to stop being called chicks and
who knows what else; there's a long list. It's hard for me to accept
that young women would select this term for themselves.
Do
what you will, call yourselves what you want. I just had to vent.

"Chick"
I really didn't think about it that
way before and I cerraintly didn't think it was offending someone,
but since you bring it up, it does make me think. I was sorta
thinking of Chica....cause my other sn is Chica Muy Loca...but maybe
I will consider changing my name....Thanks for bringing it up
though.

Re:

Thanks for being understanding. A
couple other women on the board have written me emails of support;
they were trying to keep the board for cello discussion (ok Gary?).
After I posted, I tried hard to think of a time when 'chick' could
be used as a term of endearment or affection and could think of no
instance.

politically correct
While I am not for anyone being
offended by anyone on this board, this seems a bit petty. Is this a
board for discussions about the cello or about being politically
correct? A name is a name is a name? Shouldn't we have the freedom
to call ourselves what we want, of course excluding hate or racially
offensive language. Wasn't the womans movement about freedom? Well,
anyway, I just had to vent also. Some people who hate Sesame Street
may be offended by my name?

Re:

Before this gets out of hand and far
from the original topic...
It's true that Cello Chat is
mainly for cello topics. Our people enjoy the freedom of digressing
now and then and that's fine.
Ernie, Dorie and the "Cello
Chicks" are all free to express themselves especially since no one
was seriously hurt or offended (apparently.)
Let's try to
stay focused on the original topic or on the cello. A little
ventilation is cool, but let's leave it at that, shall we? Is that
acceptable?

Re:

Glad you posted, Dorie; I've been of
a like mind for a while.
Ernie, is it that Dorie's post and
responses/replies thereto aren't cello-related, or you don't see the
nickname "Chick" to be demeaning to women, or that the idea that it
is demeaning just isn't worth a darn?? To be honest, the "this seems
a bit petty" comment of yours IMO only serves to reinforce the
thoughts expressed in Dorie's original post. If I've misconstrued
your post, my apologies.

The
vernacular
Yeah, in this country being a 'hip
chick' is cool believe
it or not. Strangely, the feminists were the ones behind it too.
If
people (I mean girls, that is) want to call themselves 'chicks' or
'birds' or 'avians' for that matter, I think that it's O.K.
Maybe it has a different meaning in your country?
I
was hoping that PC mania (outside of people being considerate to one
another) hadn't penetrated CelloChat?
No longer is Janos
'Iceman' Starker a 'cold player' - he must be a
"'thermally-challanged' player".

I love
Ernie!
I liked the Count as well
And
when Mr Perlman and Mr Ma appeared! Indeed I am now convinced that
TV is educational, because I didn't know what a violin was until I
saw Perlman on the Street when I was about 2 and a half. I used to
simulate a violin, with a ukelele and a piece of dowling!
I
hope that nobody will take offence to my name - associated with
Ancient Greek lady poets on the isle of Lesbos. I need say no
more.

"Chick"
or "hen" as endearments
Yes, in the North of England they
are endearments. I just remembered. On of our neighbours had a
mother from Yorkshire, who called me (an honourary grandchild)and
her other female descendants 'chickie', 'chick' or 'hen'.
Is
Lucy around anywhere? She might be able to help us?

Poultry
On those not-so-frequent occassion
when I use the word chick to describe a female, it's usually a term
of endearment and often preceded by a positive adjective. ("She's a
cool/smart/hip/etc chick.") The word "broad" on the other
hand......
Oh, yes -- I've not yet heard tha Ahn Trio.
