This has to do with practice time;
wondering if you've had this experience. I find practicing
orchestral passages is boring; I hate it - it takes so much effort
for me to pull this stuff out and work on the noodles. We're doing
Brahms 4, Haydn and a Stamitz viola concerto on the 25th. My
practice time for this concert has been so limited but over the
weekend, because I have today off, I practiced on Saturday. I spent
a tiny bit of time on the Brahms noodles, got hopelessly bored, and
then took challenging solo things out of the cabinet and played for
the heck of it for a couple hours. Had a blast; I even heard myself
telling myself, "Hey, I can play this thing (the cello, I
mean)."
I went to rehearsal yesterday and played the Brahms
so much better than previous weeks; felt confident. (The Haydn and
Stamitz are easy pieces.)
I'm thinking the best way to
practice orchestral music is to play something else. Whaddya
think?

An interesting observation, Dorie. I
suspect many of us have had similar experiences. I wonder if the
secret isn't revealed in your statement "Hey, I can play this
thing." It seems to me that a "diversionary" confidence-building
foray is often just what the doctor ordered. "If you believe you
can, you can" type of thing.
The only time I ever tried
Brahms orchestral music was an absolute disaster. I was in way over
my head, and ended up dropping out (and haven't been back since). My
hat's off to you, Dorie!

I agree that orchestra music
practice is boring! I have found one way to make it more exciting. I
get the CD of the piece from the library and play along with the CD.
It helps me learn the tempo, rhythm, other instruments parts, and
musicallity of the piece as well as the notes, plus I can pretend I
belong to the London Philharmonic!
Any hints on practicing
Popper etudes?

I do practice with CDs but the
problem is this; there are long passages that are fine and then
there are those 3-4 measure noodles here and there that drive me
nuts. I don't want to play through 35 minutes of what I can play
with the CD for the scattered 5 minutes of the stuff I can't. So, I
scan the music, pick out those places and practice just those
measures. What's boring is playing these short killer things over
and over and over and...you get the point.
