Does
everyone here uses books ??
Hi !!
Reading the messages at this board, it appeares that
everybody learns cello out of a book..... (mostly Suzuki) but I
don't use any book.
At about the 3rd lesson, I brought a book I borrowed from a
friend of mine, but that didn't work out. Now my teacher shows me
how to play spiccatto, vibrato, trillers, whatever and I practise
that in much different ways at home. Today, he taught me how to play
in a large position (D-major scale etc.) so that's what I'm going to
practise this week, together with a little piece by
Schubert.
What I wanted to ask you is : do you think you
learn faster when you use a book ?? I'm desperately to learn to play
the cello well, to play the Bach Suites and the Elgar concerto and
the Swan and all the great pieces that make the world such an
interesting place !! Do you think I'd better use a book ??
My
teacher says this is a rather uncommon way of teaching and that I'm
making progress fast. But I'm sure he'll allow me to use a (any)
book again if I'd prefer that.
Anyways, I really hope that you'll reply to this message
!!
Lots of love'n'hugs, Martine.
P.S. Today's the
day I got Jacks exactely a whole month !! Wow, I seems like only
yesterday that I got her. I
baked a cake to celebrate it.

Re:

lol I personally do use books like
suzuki when I started out but now I am using etudes in books... lee
is really hard for me But my
normal music I get seperate from each other because I am playing
harder stuff... I would get the bach suites in a book because it
would be more reasonable but if you can not learn that way eaither
tear the book apart lol or buy music seperatly. *grins*
I
guess that I did not learn scales from a book if that is what you
mean. It seems like you do just fine without a book, if that is the
case, keep it up!
Well... I dont think I helped but maybe
someone else can help you lol beast of luck on your cello playing.
How long have you been playing for?

books....
Thanks for your reply !!
Wow,
it must be wonderful to be able to play the Bach suites !! How long
have you been taking lessons now ?? I had some lessons just to try
it out and a month and a day ago, I finally started 'real' , coz
then I bought my own cello !!!
Mmm, I hope I'm doing fine
my teacher
says I do, but in my opinion things go far too sloooooooow.... how long
does it (average) take before one can play the Swan or Elgar
concerto or the Bach suites ??? I fear that I'll never learn
those... my vibrato sounds like a bumble bee hahahaha !!
Anyways, thnxx again for your message.

Books...
It took me about a year of playing
before I started working on the Bach Suites, but most of that first
year was a very long summer break during which I didn't touch the
cello. I probably could've started them earlier, tho.
I know
exactly how you feel!! That whole, "I need to get good at this as
quickly as possible." I used to say that a lot.
If you're
desperate to try a book, then try a book! I like
Suzuki books because they provide a good sampling of standard (and
not so standard) cello rep all in one package. And because there's
ten of them, so there's something to play at every level. But I
would'nt stick entirely to Suzuki. I learned scales from a different
book, and played duets from a few books, played orchestra music (it
took me 8 months of playing before I was good enough for our high
school orchestra.) And I just thought of something I played that
really worked well. Christmas carols. I'm not kidding! Playing
something you know the melody of, so you can just concentrate on
getting the notes right really helped me.
It doesn't really
matter, I don't think, if you use books or not, or which books you
use. I don't think one method is faster than the other. If you love
it (and you do...) and you work at it (and you are...) then you're
gonna get better!
Take care, Kristina

Re:

truth to tell I played the suzuki
books for around 3 years before my teacher let me go onto more,
better stuff But they
seemed to help. I have been playing for 5 years soyou have plenty of
time but for the first 4.5 years I went really slowly, I just did
not like the cell half of the time because practising was SOOOOO
BORING lol but now I have really started liking playing and I am
going so much quicker. My teacher says finsh this piece by the next
lesson, and I do.... at least I try to Enough about
me!
The swan is such a beautiful piece but don't get
frustrated if you do not zoom through all your pieces perfectly
(Although it sounds like you might) Try to enjoy every piece you
play! There are tons of beautiful peaces out there.
Good
Luck! Hilary
