Schelemo!!
Last night coming home from musical
rehearsal, I got in my car and my radio was, as usual, on the
Classical station. (I've found that the more and more I listen to
pop music, the more and more I like classical. or maybe it's the
more and more I enjoy Classical music, the more and more annoying
pop music is to me. Anyways..) There was this completely gorgeous
piece playing, but I only heard a small part of it. I got home
before they announced the title of the piece. I loved it so much,
what little I heard anyway, and I immediately knew "This MUST be
Schelemo!!" I'd never heard any part of it before.
So I
emailed the radio station, and asked them if it was Schelemo, and I
received an email back that said I was right, it was Schelemo!! So
now I need a recording of it.
Without getting into a debate, which recording is the favorite of
all you guys?

Aaron,
My absolute favorite
recordings of Schelomo are by Leonard Rose and
Rostropovich.
Given your Biblical background, you do know
what Schelomo is about don't you?

Zara
Nelsova hands down (IMHO)
If you're bored you can read my
Schelomo paper from 1999. It's kinda long, and may or may not help
cure insomnia.

Re:
Schelemo!!
I would recommend Zara Nelsova (she
prefers the one with Abravanel to the one with Bloch because of
Bloch's limitations as a conductor), Feuermann with Philadelphia,
and Rose - three very different and all very effective approaches.
The Nelsova and Feuermann were available on CD last time I checked-
don't know about Rose.
Heard a truly awful verion on the
radio one day that turned out to be Maisky- but I don't know many of
the other 'modern' versions. In Schelomo Bloch's intentions are
specifically indicated in extraordinary detail- probably to a
greater extent than in any other concerto in the common repertoire.
And yet this piece suffers from the most widespread whimsicality in
approach. I've never understood...what was the question again?...

Schelomo Recording
On my budget, I search out
inexpensive cds. A few years ago I found Laszlo Varga's recording of
Schelomo, along with the Saint-Saens and Schumann concertos, all on
one Vox Prima cd (mwcd 7155), I believe for $2.88. I think Mr. Varga
did a swell job! And the price is right.

Zarah Nelsova is the one! She
knew Bloch and worked it with him. My favourite.......

My soft spot is for the EARLY
(mono-1951) Rose with Mitropoulos and NY Phil---to be reissued in
the not-too-distant future on CD by Biddulph. (IMHO, the later
stereo version by Rose, tho quite good, pales in comparison.)

Re:
Schelemo!!
During my first year as principal
cellist of the Utah Symphony, Zara played both Schelomo and
Saint-Saens with us, with Maurice Abravanel conducting. It was a
wonderful, memorable concert! And she is indeed a grand lady. We had
to have an oversized cello platform for her, because of her
extremely full, but elegant gowns. I treasure my recording of her
Schelomo, all the more so because of her having signed the record
jacket for me.

Um,
Solomon, right?
Perhaps I should read through the Schelemo paper of, . . .
.Tracie's? I can always come back later and change that name if I am
wrong.

The recording of Harrell along with
the Shostakovich is one of his best. I highly recommend it. Haitink
conducts the Concertgebow orchestra. Jon Pegis

I'm printing your report right now.
Yes, all twelve pages! I'm hoping
to be able to read a bit of it tomorrow while being a room monitor
for a solo/ensemble contest. There's usually some down-time when
nothing's going on.

Schelomo IS
a great piece.
(can I just vote again for Zara Nelsova/Abravanel here?)

I read through the first 7 pages
today. I'm on page 8 right now. It really is interesting. Thanks.
Last night I went to Hastings to see if I could find a copy
of Nelsova or Slava playing Schelemo, and couldn't find it. No
copies of it at all, much less a specific cellist. I'll probably
have to order it online.

discuss this piece.

I think there is an Ofra Harnoy
album of shelomo, and she plays it very nicely, but the best part of
the album is that Kol Nidre is also on it, and she plays that
excellently.

call that a "brief history"?
I'm going to read it, but it'll take
me a while...a long while.

Hahaha
Hahahahahahahaha
Yeah, it's
brief.
It
could have been longer, but I was limited to 30 pages. (it's really
long in it's normal print form- luckily it takes less paper in it's
internet form)
Perhaps some caffiene would
help...
