rosin question
Can I put too much rosin on my bow?
Also, what is the best way to clean your strings? I once read that
strings should be cleaned of rosin, but the post did not mention how
often or how to clean the strings. Lately, I've been getting a flat
sound on my strings necessitating my digging deeper into the string
to get a correct pitch. Is this due to rosin build up? (or sadly, my
lack of skill?) Cheers ray

Yes, you can put too much rosin on
your bow. Do you get a cloud when you play? Then you have too much.
Your strings do need to be cleaned of excess rosin buildup. Alcohol
works very well for cleaning strings, and for taking the varnish
right off your cello, so be careful. I wipe my strings off with a
clean (well mostly) cloth after I play. I also wipe the finish under
the playing area. I tease the beginners that they aren't really
cellists until they start carrying around a dirty little
rag.
We have had a few discussions in the past about how much
rosin to use and how often to put more rosin on, how to clean it off
strings, top, bowhair, etc. A look through past posts might give you
just the information you're looking for.
