Beethoven Symphony No. 7
Must the first movement (Vivace)
ALWAYS lapse into 2/4 time?

You mean you don't like the dotted
eighth/sixteenth/eighth note douplet version? But it is so much
easier to play it that way! Beethoven couldn't hear it anyway, so
what does it matter!
All kidding aside, I feel your pain!
Who is conducting and allowing it to happen?
And a side note
for the younger players on the board. Playing dotted rhythms for
extended periods of time is one of the hardest things for musicians
to do, whether in 6/8 or 2/4 time. Use your metronomes faithfully
and count the subdivisions of the dotted rhythms!

Even more ubiquitous than that is
the new, slower tempo in the 10th measure of the intro.
