Beginner needs help!
Does anyone have any suggestions on what brand of cello is good for a new student? The brand Cremona has been recommended, does anyone play one? How much should I be expecting to spend? IWhat do I look for in a "good cello"? Is there a big difference between the 3/4 and 4/4 size? I have so many questions I have no idea where to start...Help!

Thanks!

Re: Beginner needs help!
I think I could help a little. I haven't heard anything positive about the
Cremona cellos. I've never played one- just going by comments from others.
There are some statements made by members here on the "New instruments"
board. As far as particular brands I'm not shure. You could check some of
the online dealers such as sharmusic.com, cellos2go.com, and stringworks,
to name a few. IMOP the most important attribute of a good beginner cello
is a nice tone. I've heard good things about the new "Artist" cellos at cellos
2 go- or something. As far as sizes go, you should be able to comfortably
reach a major third in 1st position(e to g# on the d-string)-first
finger holding e while stretching the pinky to reach g#. If that is too hard to
reach you might want to consider a 3/4 size. Even then I would still lean
toward a full size-4/4- if you're in the middle of a growing spurt. I believe
that if you're serious enough about playing cello you really should avoid
cheap instruments all together-(IMOP anything less than $1000) Instruments
below this price point are usually made of plywood, which have ruggedness
for students but sound really awfull, no matter how hard you try. You want
something that meets or exeeds MENC standards I think it is.

Re: Beginner needs help!
Mr Andrew Victor has written an excellent guide for buying a cello that he posted again recently on the instruments and equipment board. You may want to take a look at that.
And www.cellos2go.com also has a wealth of GREAT information.

For a beginner, you may want to consider renting (many shops will let you accrue your rental money towards the purchase of an instrument). You can learn a lot about what qualities you like and dislike in cellos, and learn the definitions of a lot of the terms you'll hear on this board through rental instruments.

I've only heard negative reviews ever of the Cremona brand instruments. Usually, the remark is that you will need additional setup/adjustments to make it playable.

As for price range, it really depends a lot on you. I've known people to spend $1700 on a beginner instrument, and people to spend $5000 or more on... well, their first instrument. My impression is that around the $2000 to $3000 mark will usually get you a decent, playable beginner instrument that you will be able to use for at least a few years before you "grow out of it."

Re: Beginner needs help!
Don't overlook the 7/8ths cellos. Some people don't know they exist. It is funny how a small difference in size/reach can make such a difference for so many -- particularly if there have been wrist or carpal tunnel problems. Just something to keep in mind because I notice you went right from 3/4 to 4/4 when you asked about size.
