I am
not worthy!
Yesterday for the first time I went
to a concert by my cello teacher. She plays first chair in the
Jupiter Symphony which is a small organization in NYC which however
gets consistent praise in the reviews. Last night she was soloist in
Tchaikosky "Andante Cantabile". Wow, she was sooo good!!!!!!! I
just sat in amazement listening to the rich and deep sound she was
able to draw from her cello, to her perfect intonation, to the way
she easily played and got great sound even with her fingers at the
end of the fingerboard. Not to mention the way she was shaping
lines, adding a little rubato here and there that would take the
listener by surprise (you know the cello coming in a split second
later or sooner). From a pedagogical point of view it was a lot
more interesting than seeing a famous cellist play, since I could
see all the things she tells me (raise/lower your elbow! get more
sound! stretch that finger!
) into her own playing. At intermission I barely had time to
speak with her, she was surrounded by a crowd of enthusiatic
audience members.

Wow -- do I know that feeling!
But
it definitely gives me warm fuzzies to think that my mere self is
able to take lessons, one-on-one with someone of that
caliber.
Dwell on the learning opportunity and not on the
unworthiness

May we ask who your teacher is?

Aren't
we CBN's brave?
Rosario, I know exactly how you
feel. The first time my husband and I saw my teacher play publicly
(although I had heard him play before; excerpts in lessons etc but
no complete performances), my husband turned, looked at me and with
a low whisper said: "Wow, Bets... you are really brave to go in and
play for him every Saturday!" 'Cause Rick has heard my (beginner)
efforts! I guess he did not know that cello could sound just that
good! Then he made the comment that he loves when I play, wich was
just the right thing to say! I realize that the teacher/student
relationship is a two way street, but at times I feel like the
little humble acolyte who wishes only to hope to be worthy of the
amazing instruction that I am receiving. Now of course, I have to
say that I am a different and at times goofy kind of soul and I have
no pride! I go into lessons and give it my all and let the chips
fall where they may. They fell very beautifully last Saturday! I
LOVE lessons like those! A big woo-hoo to me and all you other CBN's
who shame themselves occasionally for the pure love of the
cello.

Sure. Her name is Chagit Glaser. She
went to Julliard and I think MSM. Did you know her when you lived in
NYC?
