CSO/Brahms Violin Concert
Are there any CelloChatters playing
in the Perlman recording of the said Concerto?
I have a very
ancient audio-tape of it, and thought it might be worth seeing who's
on it - and, cream me with an electric toaster, its the
CSO. Unfortunately the tape is very warped, but I shall treasure
it always!

David, Giulini conducts the Brahms
with Perlman--LONG, LONG LONG before MY time. :>)

I'm pretty sure I'm on that one. I
had some glorious years with Giullini, but my feeble brain doesn't
remember when he stopped. I had thought it was in the late 70's, but
maybe he went until the early 80's. I'm sorry if this post
doesn't interest everybody. David

David, wasn't this the session where
a now deceased cellist had coughing fits during many of the takes?
(I'll mention the name privately so as not to embarass the man's
spirit.)

It's possible. That seemed to happen
a few times. I remember the time when he got up and left the
session, and then came back while the tapes were rolling! But I
honestly can't remember what piece it was in. We used to do so much
recording, and now we do so little. Oh well.

Is that the case with all orchestras
do you think? (that they used to do so much recording and now do
little)
I'm just thinking that it's the same with the USO.
Is it because there are already recordings of the repertoire
out there and record companies don't see why they should make more?
Or because it's so cheap to re-release older recordings in new shiny
packaging?
If you guys aren't recording these days, who is?
Just wonderin'.

Re:
recording
It does seem as I wander thru local
record retailers that reading the fine print on the CD package more
often than not discloses "Recorded January 17, 1973" or something of
that sort. I'm sure it must save a lot on production costs -- maybe
it's even a way to weasel out of additional royalties?
Given
that classical music is about 2 or 3% of the recording market, I
guess there's not much commercial incentive.
Sad though

Re:

Well, how will I be able to tell
which one is you? Yes, it is Giulini, why didn't I mention it
before, and yes it's early 80's I think - before I was
born!
As a matter of fact I discovered the tape whilst
helping to clear the house of my deceased grandmother. It was a
little dull, so I decided to see, or rather hear what was in the
tape machine, so I clicked it on, and there was Brahms' Violin
Concert. However, I failed to loook on the back of the packet until
a coulple of days ago!
As I said, I shall treasure it
always!
