Quick,
Silly Topic
Do you keep a notebook for cello
lessons? I do. I decided to get one of the ones where you can slip
paper in the cover and binding. I pulled some cool pictures from
this site's archives and made color prints here at work. Now my
cello notebook is my own little piece of computer "folk" art. :-)
(Too lazy for emoticons!)
Just thought I'd share.

I guess I have 3 notebooks (am I
obsessed?)! One has stuff I've printed from ICS - that's really a
resource tool. Then I have a little spiral bound notebook I bring to
lessons (my teacher likes to diagram stuff. Last night I learned
about conducting patterns, complete with pictures). And then I have
a journal notebook where I (sporadically) record my cello-related
feelings, triumphs, heartbreaks, et al.

Re:
Cello Journal
Wow, Jan, what a wonderful idea - a
journal where you keep track of how you feel about playing the
cello. I can imagine some real value from that exercise.
Thanks!
By the way, we know each other. I'm the Mary
from Summerkeys, 1997. One of my fondest memories from that
Lubec week was the sight of you playing, solo, on a hill
overlooking the harbor and the Bay of Fundy.

Hi
Mary!!
How are you?! That was a great week,
wasn't it? My favorite memory is our quartet rehearsal on the
bandstand - remember? And the applause from the people in the truck
we didn't know was sitting right below us?!
Yes, my cello
journal is a constant source of inspiration. My first cello teacher
suggested it, and I'm so glad he did. It's a very sporadic thing
(the writing), but it's gotten me through some really tough spots
when I came "this close" to quitting. The danger of that is over,
but it helps with the ineveitable slumps, too.
Journal,
journey . . . they go hand in hand, I guess.

does it
help ??
I don't have a 'real' journal, but I
collect interviews with other cellist for inspirating notes. Perhaps
I should write down everything my teacher says after my lesson ?? Do
you think it would help me making progress ??

Re:

Yes, I think it will help. I record
not only what my teacher says, but how I feel. When I feel
frustrated, and start using the "Q" word, I write about it. Then a
few weeks later when everything's turned around and I'm making
progress on my latest piece, I write about it. It's great to look
back over the years and see the ups and downs, and the
encouragement. It's given me a jump start more times than I can
count. And it's nice to be able to look back and see the positive
feedback I've recorded. Because if you're like me, you tend to focus
on the negative and the positive comments somehow fade away in my
memory. That's why I write it down!!

Re:

I've done this for years, and find
it very helpful. Although my journals have strayed far from cello at
times, that is always the focus. When I don't feel like practicing
sometimes it helps to write first, then go practice. I almost always
make an entry after a lesson, so now I can go back a long way and
see what I was doing "when."
