Vaughan Williams
Six Studies in English Folk Song
Does anyone know of a recording of these lovely folk songs arranged
for cello and piano by Vaughan Williams and dedicated to the English
cellist May Mukle? I have only been able to find recordings with
viola and piano or oboe and piano. I have seen reference to a CD
with Eileen Croxford, cello and David Parkhouse, piano on Angel/EMI
65100 but have not been able to find it anywhere. I have the music
which was published in 1927 by Stainer and Bell, but would
appreciate any recomendations of recordings of these simple but,
lovely pieces. Has anyone played these?

I have the Eileen Croxford CD. I think I got it from Amazon but I'm
not sure. Okay, yes, here it is:
"Vaughan Williams: Chamber
Music [IMPORT]" Ralph Vaughan Williams (Composer), et al; Audio
CD; @ $12.97
I like it but I have only listened to it once
and not very critically so I won't give any more review than that.

I've played the piano accompaniment for my dear friend Erin (called
Little Erin to avoid confusion, since we have the same name, sort
of). She plays clarinet, and I accompanied her at a contest last
year. (which she recieved the honor of "Outstanding Performer of the
Day." She attirbutes it to me. Riiight) Anyway we played the first
and second movements. I liked the second movement more. It was very
pretty in an odd way. Hmm.

I forgot to say, I'd also played them, but not very well. So has
Ryan (where is Ryan, by the way?) who DID play them very well.

Thanks for looking that up for me. I will give them a try. I see
that it is new this year. I looked there before but I guess it was
not available at that time.

Re: Vaughn
Williams
I love performing these pieces. On a recital they can all be
performed, but I've also used some of the slower ones for wedding
preludes, church preludes.....they are just great pieces to know
well and be able to pull out on short notice!

I'm still around, but have had a lot of difficulty getting
consistant access to the computer, due to some minor shuffling
around of some household furnishings. That should be ending soon.
Meanwhile, a brief reply regarding the VW. I, too, enjoy the
pieces, and have performed them several times. Not the most
difficult, technically, but have the ability to appeal to cellists
of all ages and experience levels. Really beautiful settings of
English folk melodies.
As to the Croxford recording, it is
beautifully played. She is fairly straight forward in her approach,
letting the music speak for itself, with a minimum of sentimentality
in her playing. The quirky sixth song is tossed off with abandon. I
would highly recommend the recording. (Thanks, Bobbie, for finding
it for us. And I am still working on the other project for you. I
will email separately soon about that.)

Re: Vaughan

I had been looking for a recording played by a cellist for years.
My mind must be playing tricks on me, because years ago (maybe five
or six) I would swear I checked a CD with that music on it out from
the library here. However, when I wanted to get it again, there was
not only no CD, but no record of it (granted, our library went
computerized in the interim so the CD could be sitting there with no
way to find it.) So whenever I looked for CD's I always looked for a
Six Studies recording. I'm glad it turned out to be a good one.
