Beginner's guide
- Music theory
Hi all,
I wrote a few months ago asking for advice on
beginning the cello with a teacher who indicated after three
lessons that it might not be suitable for me. I really appreciated
the support I received from Cello Chat posters and I have continued
with the cello and my teacher. My learning pace is slow but I am
having a great time and now get along really well with my
teacher.
I have another question that I hoped people might be
able to assist with. I wondered if anyone could suggest some web
sites or books that might help me learn a little more about the
musical theory relevant to the cello. I am totally new to music
so a beginner's guide would be great.
Thanks,
Jane

Luckman's Handbook for Cellists
This book comes highly recommended not just by me as a cello
student, but by a number of professionals who have seen it and now
suggest their students get it. It is an excellent resource,
comprehensive. You will find theory, fingering patterns,
explanations of harmonics, definitions of little symbols nobody
knows the names of. It's well written, organized, by a cellist who
also offers some really nice musical arrangements. I tend to neglect
to mention that at times. I need to reference her website as I know
it is quite informational. I'll be back with that, unless someone
beats me to it.
