Re:
Szigeti
Is this the violinist? If it is, I have heard a CD of him playing
Roumanian Dances, with Bela himself at the piano. From what I could
hear, he sounded pretty good - wonderful artificial harmonics. BTW,
has anybody played the transcription of these dances on the cello? I
found an Internation Edition the other day.

great
master
Yup, I enjoy his playing very much.. Unfortunately, there are not
many recording around.. My first collection of his performance is
Beethoven/Brahms Violin Concerto.. His performance according to my
memory, is close to Dino Francescati with little zinc.. Most of his
recording you can find is "Pearl" By the way, the recording is
tolerable.. I also have his Mozart #4, Prokofiev #1 and Mendelssohn
violin concertos.. I know there are several chamber music he
recorded, I think I have to go to TowerRecord for treasure hunting
when I get the chance.. Sam

I have Szigeti, with Casals, and Dame Myra Hess in the brahms trio
op 8. (available on cd) Great recording.
I like his playing.
I have a few of his recordings on LP but no machine for now

Elegant!
That's the word I was looking for! In this Bartok, he combined the
earthy, 'rough' qualities with *elegance*.

Re:
Szigeti
I have always loved his playing, but never mention him because i
still, after hearing a few sources who knew him well, don't know for
sure how to pronounce his name.
Does it rhyme with "lickety"
(as in lickety-split) or with "spaghetti?" The latter rolls of the
tongue easier and seems to be the most common pronunciation, but
some who knew him pronounce it the former way. The only time i heard
my teacher, who is Hungarian, say his name, it sounded like he
pronounced it halfway between these 2 ways, but i was too
preoccupied (see: stupid) to ask him to repeat it.

Re:
Szigeti
Joseph Szigeti (or "Saghetti" or "Sighetti" to hear the
pronounciation I grew up with) was known as a "violinists'
violinist" when I heard him mentioned - known for his honor to the
music and his lack of just showing off for the masses.
I was
fortunate enough to attend his recital at our college around 1955. I
still remember Beethoven's Spring sonata - that way!
