Use a metronome. Start slowly. Increase the speed gradually.

I guarantee that this will work. But you MUST be patient. Playing fast is more a question of coordination and synchronization than it is a question of speed.

faster, you fool!
What works really well is playing faster in spurts.

For example, you want to play ABCDEFG
practice AB CD EF G until the spurts are fast and relaxed

then A BC DE FR

then ABC DEF G
then A BCD EFG
then AB CDE FG

then all groups of 3, and 4, 6

feel free to practice any small group as much as possible. It also helps to practice without fingers, just figure out the bow pattern.

Have fun!

faster playing!!, and other ways to impress the opposite sex
2 weeks later, i'm sure you are playing faster than the speed of sound by now...and having to deal with the time warp of listening to what you played so long AFTER you played it...

the 2 replies i agree are excellent ways of building up speed...slowly for programming the motions, and in quick bytes for coordination. I find even after using these methods to improve a passage, i often still get tight and "choke" before making it through. The next practicing i do is to start from the end...play the last beat, then the last half bar...then the last bar, 2 bars, etc. I usually realize that the passage isn't as hard as my body thinks, but there had been a cumalitve tension building up that was keeping me from success. Programming and coordinating the END well adds confidence and teaches where to release this tension.

btw, it took me until age 29, Smetena's Bartered Bride Overture, to finally figure this one out.

good luck

Re: faster playing!!, and other ways to impress the opposite
I'm working on several pieces which need to be faster, so I've been reading with interest. After mulling over mvotapek's suggestion yesterday, I tried going backwards last night and I see that this trick has serious potential for me! My body forgot to do its tensing thing and I experienced a fresh approach to previously frustrating passages. Together with the two other suggestions, I think I have a chance. (I'm contemplating the other areas in my life where going backwards might be enlightening.) Thanks all. Loved your humor and style there, mvotapek.

I agree with everyone else's suggestions. In addition, the best method I have discovered for learning to play a passage faster is to practice it SOFTLY. When you do this, your left hand will automatically relax. You will be amazed at how much more quickly you can play. Then when you play it faster, try to keep the same relaxed feeling in your left hand.

fast playing
I've posted this on the cello chat board before, but Frank Miller always taught to practice scales fast with separate bow. Also arpeggios. It does wonders for coordination and helps you play passages much faster with quite a bit of ease.
