solo pieces with
orchestra
A local amateur orchestra asked me to solo with them this fall, and
I'm having trouble deciding what to play. It has to be under 15
minutes and the orchestra parts can't be too difficult. Does anybody
have any suggestions?

I'm a professional orchestral player. I think I can handle any
piece you can come up with.

Is the local group a full orchestra?

It is a full orchestra, although the strings are a bit thin; I'm
not sure of the exact numbers.

Re: solo pieces

Tchaikovsky's Pezzo Capricioso goes over really well and is easy
for the orchestra...but it is hard for the cello...Vivaldi wrote
some great concerti that are under 15...Faure Elegy isn't hard, and
neither is Popper Hungarian Rhapsody...sounds hard for the soloist
but really isn't...easy orch parts....maybe Dvorak Rondo or Faure
Elegy....sounds like a fun gig.

Kol Nidrei, Dvorak Silent woods, Bloch 3 Jewish pieces... they're
all a bit shorter though...

solo
pieces...
What about Resphighi's Adagio con variazioni, I think it's about 15
minutes long and not too hard but harder than things like Faure's
Elegy. It's really lovely.

Re: Korngold
Concerto
Amen to that! I had the opportunitiy to perform it with the Utah
Symphony several seasons ago, and I know it has been done by Janet
Horvath, assistant principal of the Minnesota Orchestra as well as
by the acting principal in Detroit and the assistant principal of
Phoenix within the past few years. It is indeed an under-valued and
under-performed concerto, partly due to it's brevity, which makes it
an awkward concerto to program for visiting artists and also because
of the stigma of being "film music," which is becoming less and less
of a problem as both critics and public alike are finally
recognizing the talents of the great composers of both film and
classical music, such as Korngold, Rozsa, Newman, Waxman, Herrmann,
etc. Even the two concertos by Nino Rota (The Godfather, etc) have
recently been recorded.

Nino
Rota?
Which two of his concertos Ryan, have been recorded? Does this also
mean that they were published. Many of his works have not been
published. He is one of my favorite composers, and all I have is a
great CD of his film scores from all of the Fellini films.
Inquirires reveal that none of the film scores have been published.
