How do you slur
fifths?
Hi,
today I tried "The Swan" and it worked better than
expected. However, there is one problem. If you want to avoid ugly
position changes you have to slur fifths, and even worse, going from
the A to the D string. The opposite way is easier because you can
pull the stopping finger from the lower to the higher string. But
from the higher to the lower string you have to lift the stopping
finger... somehow. If you slur the notes perfectly there is no gap
that gives to time to move the finger, and one of the two notes will
be 'damaged'. Or both. Is there a trick? Diverting the audience from
the slurs by coughing just in time?

try both
ways...
I saw Paul Tortilier played Swan once live in a concert, he just
kept those first 3 notes in A string.. I tried that methos and
pretty happy with the quality of "consistancy" at A string.. I know
the slur problem because my 4th finger does not have that good
reflex based on anatomical structure of almost human.. Try both
ways and decide by yourself.. Sam

Something I use often is to change fingers to the next
lower-numbered one as I move down a fifth to the adjacent string.
For example, from D on the A-string to G on the D-string, I might
play 3-2 or 2-1. For The Swan, though, I play the first three notes
on the A-string.

Re: How do you

Samcn, Walter,
thanks for your statements. I play the first
5 notes on the A-string, but when it comes to the g (6th note)
staying on the A strings gets difficult - at least without
scordatura It is d-g, on
A- and D-string, and both notes should be played with finger 1... I
tried to stop both notes as a double stop, but this hampers the
vibrato and, because it's me who plays it, the intonation as well Maybe I
shouldn't care that much about it because it is my third month on
the cello. Perhaps it just takes more time and practise to get the
string crossings right. But that's the only critical part of the
whole piece, in my opinion.

If I remember correctly, I play that phrase (E-D-G) with 4-2-2
fingering. I just stop both A and D strings with my 2nd finger at
the same time. I guess it works, but maybe I never really paid
attention (ahem... ) Anyways,
you could try it. Do whatever you need to to get it the way you want
it

Re: How do you

This is pretty unorthodox, but I play that passage (starting with
the 4th note E) 4-2-1-2-3-4 or even 4-2-1-2-4-4. Of course, to do
that first fingering comfortably, your left thumb has to be out from
behind the neck, your left hand more up and looking like a
pianist's, so you can expand easily between the 2nd and 3rd fingers
for that big whole step. The second fingering is very Claus
Adam--using combinations of extensions and half-step shifts to avoid
shifts larger than necessary.
