sharpening endpins
I really need to get my endpin sharpened but don't have a clue if I need to go to an instrument shop/ can do it myself/ should go to an iron monger... what would you recommend? I don't want to pay mega bucks going to a luthier if I could get any old guy to do it... and traipsing across London in the rain (oh how it's raining at the moment!) when I could be getting the knife sharpener out doesn't really appeal either!

You can go down to the local hardware store and pick up a little metal chisel. Something say 8 inches in length with flat sides. They often come in nice plastic sleeves and cost about $4 US. They are great for sharpening an endpin. I can get my endpin really sharp in about 10 minutes with minimal effort.

I would just caution to sharpen it over a disposable newspaper, wash your hands and the endpin afterwards. And keep the chisel wrapped in something and put away. You don't want to ingest any of the metal that come off the endpin.

Having a little metal chisel comes in handy because you can sharpen up your end pin every few weeks or whenever you think you need to.

Oops. I meant a little metal file. Not a chisel.
Yes, definitely a file.

I use a file too if I have to, but usually I get my husband to do it.

He's a chef, they get lots of practise sharpening knives. So if you happen to know any chefs, ask one. But remind them you don't need to carve roasts with it!! :)

Thankyou!
It's amazing... I go to bed wondering randomly, and when I wake up, I have several answers from the other side of the world. Ain't technology (and you people) wonderful!

all done
can't believe that I've been meaning to do that for so long, and now (on your recommendations), I went to the ironmongers, bought the file, and had a sharp spike again within half an hour... Thankyou!
