Re: What
variables are checked during "setting up"
Well, I can't speak for all shops, but I can speak for StringWorks
strictly regarding setup, if ya'll don't mind terribly...
At
StringWorks, setup consists of the following:
Fit and/or
carve a bridge (depending on instrument) Fit and/or carve
soundpost Plane fingerboard Scoop fingerboard (for
cellos) Fit pegs Ream pegholes Fit enbutton or
endpin Adjust nut and check string guides Carve and trim top
of bridge and make proper string guides Check string
height Check peg fit Check tailpiece length Adjust
soundpost When fully setup, play test and make any adjustments
needed. In the play test, instruments are given a 'ranking' and
comments about their particular tone are noted.
I'm sure many
of the good violin shops do very similar steps in setup - be careful
with purchasing from general music stores because they might not
have such detailed setup requirements, and because of that, the
instrument performance will suffer greatly.
