Russian Cello Music
Hello all!

I am fanatical about Russian cello music, and am having terrible problems getting hold of anything! A smal amount is published and a little more is available from the British Library, but the sorts of pieces I'm after (Julian Krein, Sonata-Fantasy for Cello and Piano, Moishei Vainberg, Sonatas for Solo Cello, Vassily Lobanov, Sonatas for cello and piano etc. etc.) Are nigh on impossible to locate, despite the fact that many of the are recorded. ANY HELP AT ALL (!!) would be very much appreciated. I've run out of ideas. I think the best option would be the e-mail address of someone with contacts in Russia to see if they are available direct from source! Cheers,

Lee Arsmtrong, frustrated cellist! :-)

Re: Russian Cello Music
Hi Lee,

I'm also interested in Russian Cello Music (or Former Soviet?)

My former teacher, Yosif Feigilson recorded and has performed Vainberg's cello works (24 preludes, 4 sonatas, cello concerto). I'm trying to find out how I can get a hold of the music as well. If you would like me to keep you informed of my progress, please email me.

If you are at a university, or know someone who is, try interlibrary loan requests.

Re: Russian Cello Music
The Vainberg (Weinberg) sonatas No. 2 and 3 were published by Sikorski in Germany, but are no longer listed in their catalog. They do have

Lobanov, Vassily
Sikorski Cat. No. 1842 Fantasie für Violoncello solo / Schnittke, A.: Klingende Buchstaben - exempla nova 142 - 28,--

www.sikorski.de/_english/index.html

The 24 preludes and the Sonata No. 1 of Vainberg were published by Soviet Composer (Muzyka Moscow). There are plans to digitize a lot of Soviet music and make it available through a Danish company but that is not planned to happen for a couple of years.

You could try tracking these publishers and see what you can find.

More on Weinberg (Vainberg)
I have been in contact with Per Skans, in Sweden and he is presently writing the biography of Vainberg. (He advises me that the family prefers the spelling Weinberg.) He was away at his summer home in the country and could not tell me the name of the publisher of the cello pieces by Weinberg. He did tell me that Yosif Feigelson, who now resides in New York, has recorded all of the preludes and sonatas for solo cello on two Olympia CDs (for which Per Skans wrote the program notes). He suggested contacting Mr. Feigelson and asking him about the music. www.artistsinternational.com/Yosif.htm

I also received a reply back from H. Sikorski in Germany, the publishers and strangely, they do not have any information on these cello pieces.
