Help!!!!!
Help!!!!
I have a CD produced by Orfeo (Germany) in 1996 titled "Salut
D'Amour"a duo for cello and piano.(C443 961 A). The first selection
"Romanze" a piece by D. Shostakovich (Opus 9),according to the
accompanying blurb, was composed for his sister in 1923. The
artists, Werner Thomas- Mifune(cello) and Carmen Piazzini (piano)
play it beautifully. I want to learn how to play it. Can I find the
sheet music? No. Not only can I not find the sheet music but various
authoritative sources claim the music has been lost. Wouldn't this
blow your mind!! What do these guys think these artists are playing.
But perhaps there is a mistake in the accompanying booklet and it's
not Opus 9. Then what are they playing? I've written to
Thomas-Mifune. No response. I've written to Orfeo. No response.
Someone in this great country of ours must know this CD and can
point me in the right direction.

Re: Help!!!!!

Werner Thomas-Mifune is a collector of Russian cello music and
publishes his collections at Edition Kunzelmann, a Swiss edition. He
has already published some books with Russian works. I have
contacted Edition Kunzelmann and have asked them if one of those
collections contains the piece you are looking for. The chances are
pretty good I think...

Horst, I don't have an E Mail address for Thomas-Mifune. I wrote a
personal letter to which he did not respond. I appreciate your
looking into this. So far--a lot of frustration. Lew

Re: Help!!!!!

Lew,
in the meantime we could try to identify this Romance.
I have done some research in the past because I am interested in
this matter as well. I have found only one Romance by Shostakovich,
several versions exist, they are for violin/cello and
orchestra/harp, even a saxophone version exists, so to me it seems
very probable that Werner T-M has made a version for cello and
piano. This Romance is no. 8 of the orchestral suite "The Gadfly",
opus 97a. I haven't found any works of Shostakovich having opus
numbers as low as 9, so this might me a printing error. You can
listen to this Romance when you go to www.amazon.com and do a search
for Shostakovich and Gadfly. There are several CDs, and Amazon
offers excerpts of those CDs that can be played on your PC via
Mediaplayer. This way we could find out if it is this Romance that
you are looking for. The excerpts, one of them was cello and harp,
sounded very nice...

Re: Help!!!!!

Horst, I checked Amazon and listened to a CD titled "The Best of
Shostakovich" (Naxos #8556684). The selection "The Gadfly, Film
Score Ste. Op 97a Romance. Nat'l SO of the Ukraine" performed by a
violin and unidentifiable instruments in the background is exactly
the one I have been searching for. As of now I don't know when this
composition was written but I will research it. The film score
reference puzzles me and I can't imagine what the connection is
between "The Gadfly" and the information supplied on the "Salut
D'Amour CD. Many thanks for the help. I still want the sheet music
for cello and piano as performed by Werner T-M. Perhaps he is the
only one who has it and doesn't wish to make it available. Maybe
Edeition Kunzelmann has it. If you crank in Centre Chostakovich on
the internet you will find that they list some of the early works of
DS.
