Neck
measurements
What is the normal clearance height for the fingerboard above the
front of the cello where it is joined to the neck? (There is
probably some technical term for this but I don't know it.)

1,8-1,9 cm on my 7/8 cello...as I build my e-cello like my real
cello I now know every mm of my cello

Re: Neck

I have four cellos at present and each one is different. They range
through 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 22mm. Henry Strobel in his "Useful
Measurements for Violin Makers" lists this distance as
19mm.

Aha! The one I thought was high is about 26, so I was right.

overstand
Bobbie, It's called the "overstand". Stobel's measurement is
good. It's the distance from the top edge of the cello to the bottom
of the fingerboard.

Re:
overstand
Thanks to both of you. Now, is there any relationship between this
measurement and the response of the cello? It seemed to me when I
was trying cellos that the higher the set of the neck, the more
responsive it was, but I didn't try enough different instruments to
make any scientific observations.

Re:
overstand
I think the more important measurement in this regard is the height
of the projected fingerboard where it meets the bridge. This has
been standardized in modern setups to 81mm. If the overstand is
high, then the angle of the neck would have to be lower than usual
to make the fingerboard projection come out to the 81mm. If the
overstand is high and the angle is a standard angle then the
projection at the bridge will be higher as well. This would add
additional height to the bridge and thus increase the tension in the
strings. Such a cello might project more, but there would probably
be a limit to the amount of loading this would create on the top
plate of the instrument.

Re: Neck

I wear about a 16 or 16 1/2
But
seriously, last night whilst searching my archives at home (the foot
high stack of papers on the back of the desk), I found a printout I
made of the page at:
www.centrum.is/hansi/mescello.html
That
has (nearly) all the dimensions in the world for 1/2, 3/4, 7/8 and
4/4 cellos. (I believe they have the other strings as well.) Haven't
had time to dig deeper, but there's quite a bit of info at that
site. I haven't ascertained whether there is a diagram somewhere to
define the terms used. I suspect that "Neck root elevation" is the
parameter this thread is about.
