Kol Nidrei
Alright. I've heard lots of people mention this piece as one of the definitive works for cello. A must-hear in the repertoire. I've listened to it several times, in different moods, trying to be objective, and I find it a little boring. :) It's a beautiful piece and everything, so maybe it's just the recording I have. It seems very flat.
The accompaniment was written for orchestra, correct? The recording I have is just with piano, so which recording with orchestra would be worth the money? I've listened to recordings of pieces with orchestra accompaniment played on piano before, and not enjoyed it much, but absolutely loved it when played by an orchestra.
(I'm assuming that Laura, at least, will reply since I seem to remember her talking about various recordings of Kol Nidrei in the past. )

You have to get a recording of it with orchestra, the piano doesn't really bring out the beauty of the music. I love Han Na Chang's recording, don't be put off by her age (she was twelve when she recorded it).

I used to think the same thing about Kol Nidrei. I do definitely think you need to hear it with the orchestra accompaniment though (I have Ofra Harnoy's recording on the cd "Romantic Cello," but I doubt it's the best recording out there :) ).
You would probably learn to appreciate it more if you got the music out and started reading it. I doubt I would have bothered to study it right now, except it's been thrown my way, and I have to play it for a church service. Now that I'm actually studying the piece though, I love it. I find that to be the case alot; it's like you just can't appreciate something until you understand it. I would recommend playing it, and understanding it better. That will (maybe) help you appreciate it more.

Btw, what recording do you have? Jacqueline duPre???

I have a CD titled Salut D'Amour in which Werner Thomas plays Kol Nidrei. If you want to hear a magnificent sounding cello get this recording. Orfeo is the recording company. You won't regret it.

Yes, du Pre. :) I love her in everything else I've heard her play, except Kol Nidrei.

The Casals recording is outstanding, IMHO.

I like the Feuermann one as well. It is on a CD called
"The Yound Feuermann". The recording is not very good
(lots of scratches - well, it has been made in 1929 !)
The Dvorak concerto is also on the CD and I think the
performance is exceptional. I never heard it played
*so* fast !

By the way, did the musical mood (or "politically correct
way to play pieces") changed a lot over the last century ?
I'm a fan of Bruno Walter and recently I found an old
record (of the 20's) of Bach's Matthew Passion.
Walter plays it like a Wagner opera, it's really awful !
Did people really played Bach like that in the 20's,
or was it just Walter's interpretation ?

I have a wonderful recording of Lynn Harrell which he played live at a concert at the Vatican in '94 honoring the victims of the Holocaust. The best for sure. And to any who aspire to play this piece beautifully, do yourselves two favors: do some research and find out what the title (and the holiday to which it refers) is all about, then find a recording of a cantor (the musical leader of a Jewish service) singing it...I have one by the great Met Opera tenor, Richard Tucker, a cantor earlier in life. Do all that and you'll begin to understand what the piece is all about.

You really have to find a good recording --it's easy to butcher. I heard a really gross performance of it a while ago --out of tune and BORING as anything (I won't name names).
Han-Na Chang isn't bad. Now that I listen to it, it definitely does sound better with orchestra. It's odd though that the duPre recording isn't all that good --it seems like something she would play well.

I have played the Kol Nidrei as an audition piece, and it is really not boring at all. I guess you need to know the feeling and time it takes to perform it well. I have the recording of Han-na Chang (sp?) :\ and it really sounds nice with the orchestra. However, it is definately not boring, even with piano.
