re Hiscox
I've had a Hiscox case for a tad over a year. So far it has
protected my cello well, though it hasn't had any major bumps or
drops to contend with.
It was recommended by my retailer who
said he had jumped up and down on the area which would be over the
bridge, and that it hadn't moved at all under his weight. He was
very impressed and recommends them highly.
My criticisms of
it are personal . My case has always been a little fussy about the
top being lined up properly before the catches can be closed, I have
to wiggle it around a bit to seat it in properly, don't know if
that's usual or I was unlucky.
There isn't a lot of storage
space, it has a drawstring bag built in opposite the scroll, which
limits how much you can carry. No pocket for music either. I carry
so much junk that I use a separate bag.
Some cases you can
take your cello out and put it back in while the case is opened
standing upright. I find the spike holding area prevents me doing
this, and I have to lie the case down to get the cello
in.
However, the carry straps are good, having different
configurations to suit the way you like to carry it. It's quite
lightweight for such a solid case, and also very compact compared to
many cases I've seen.
The manufacturers' blurb also says it
has excellent thermodynamic properties, and I haven't had any
problems there despite pretty big temperature fluctuations, and I
think it had a 12 month warranty.
Perhaps most importantly, I
feel a lot more confident about taking my cello places, and I feel
it is well protected and safe in this case.

Hiscox
cases
I have had 2 Hiscox cases over the years. Both have held up well to
fairly tough handling. I find them to be sturdier and more stable
than some other hard cases. I don't have the problem that Karen has
- I can take my cello in and out of the case when it is vertical
quite easily.
The major plus for me is that Hiscox cases are
slightly larger than other makes. My cello won't fit safely into
cases by BAM/Winter etc. They are also fairly cheap (£240 ish
retail).

I bought a Bam
instead
My friend has a Hiscox and has all the problems you list -can't
line up the clips and can't load the cello vertically, can't rely on
the case standing up unaided either. For all these reasons I bought
a Bam this year instead of a Hiscox - very similar price here in the
UK - I am more than satisfied with the Bam - cool colours and much
better back pack staps and a music pouch too!!!
