Heinrich Schiff
and the Haydn Cello Concertos
I've been looking for a good recording of the Haydn Cello Concertos
(the Cmaj in particular) for a while, because I don't much like the
obvious choices: du Pre plays it incredibly slowly, Rostropovich
tends to rush, and in general neither sound at all 'clean' to
me.
The best I've found is Pieter Wispelwey, who plays it at
a cracking pace on a period instrument and has an incredible cadenza
for the first movement. Definitely a recommended CD!
I've
heard that Heinrich Schiff has made a great recording with the
Phillips label on a modern instrument (which would be perfect), but
I can't find it anywhere. It's evidently out of print. Does anyone
have any idea where I could find a second hand/old stock copy of it
on CD?
Thanks, Nutter

Re: Heinrich

I just did a check on a Canadian website Chapters-Indigo and they
indicate that they have 24 hour shipping on the Schiff the Haydn
Cello Concertos CD. The price is $24.26 Canadian which is about
$16US. You could try ordering it and if they backorder it on you,
just cancel the order if you do not want to wait.

I just wanted to mention that Lynn Harrell has a great recording of
the Haydn concertos. I think its my favorite recording of all. Its
one of these recordings you can listen to over and over again, its
so great. It may be surprising because you might expect Lynn
Harrell to be better at lush romantic stuff, but really its
absolutely wonderful.

Ditto about the Harrell recording.
I also have an old DG
recording with Fournier playing both concertos, and if I remember
the notes correctly it's the first recording of the C maj. It's a
superb recording - worth looking for.
I've always liked the
Yo Yo Ma version also, but haven't listened to it in a long time.

My personal favorite is Truls Mork. I think you can find his haydn
cd on cdnow.com, but I'm not sure.

If you are looking for clean and elegant, Yo Yo's recordings are
the best!
This is Vintage Ma at its best while he was still
playing on the Fournier Gofriller (I know it wasn't offically named
that).
Don't look for a huge lush sound from Ma in this
recording. I don't really look for that in Haydn anyway...
I
haven't yet heard a recording of the Haydns that I like better.

Re: Heinrich

Thanks for the recommendations guys.
I already have Lynn
Harrell. He has a nice tone, but he plays it just as slowly as du
Pre and I don't like the way he smothers it with
vibrato.
I'll see if I can get hold of Truls Monk and Yo Yo
Ma--Paul, you should have a listen to the Wispelwey version, it is
about as clean and crisp as you can get; quite
remarkable.
Thanks again, Milo

Don't forgedt Bylsma! He has a cd with both Haydn, and the Kraft
(which is nice to have).
He takes the thrid movement of the C
at an astonishing speed. -eva

Let's not
forget...
Once again, it seems to be my role to mention the recording that's
been left out - Christine Walevska. As far as I know, her recording
of the two Haydn Cello Concertos with Edo de Waart and the English
Chamber Orchestra, on the Philips label, is the only one of her many
superb concerto recordings that's currently commercially available
on CD. It's really extraordinary, and worth a listen. Her Haydn D is
consummately lyrical and tasteful, with her tone that's typically
"liquid gold." Her interpretation of the Haydn C is more challenging
and radical, and perhaps is not for everyone. For example, her
tempos are leisurely, and she brings a "bel canto" element to places
that are almost always thought of as "crisp," and thus inconceivable
any other way. But it's genuinely artistic, and an original view
that deserves fair consideration. An accomplishment not to be
overlooked!

Re: Let's not

Suffice it to say there are now enough options, but while I do like
some of the recordings mentioned, I don't believe anyone has ever
played the D-Major as well as Feuermann...depite the rotten
orchestra (interesting story there) and sound quality, he sounds
like a million bucks as always, with such a clean and beautiful tone
through the primitive technology it is hard to believe the thing was
recorded sixty years ago. And it's out on Naxos now (not just Pearl,
Vol I) couple with his Dvorak.
