Feuermann/Toscanini/B B C Don Q
Had a great couple of visits with Keith Harvey in London this week.
He reports of hearing this legendary unpublished recording (NOT to
be confused with the Toscanini/N B C performance from Oct. of 193 and said
that, of all the Don Qs he's heard, Feuermann's playing of the final
variation had him in tears. He reports that the whole performance is
a sensation! Nothing has been finalized, but it is hoped that this
performance will be released on his Cello Classics label in a year.
I'll keep this board informed.
He is also currently
investigating a rumored appearance in Holland of an unpublished
recording by Feuermann of "Hora Staccato".
Great fun for the
recording-mad Slidemaster in England!!

Re:

Great news, Gary. Is the DQ performance from a recorded concert,
live broadcast or a studio recording? We all look forward to hearing
it! Although it may be sacrilegious to use this analogy, I just had
the thought that awaiting a new and unheard (in our current
generation) performance of Feuermann is somewhat akin to awaiting
the newest "discovery" of a certain professor/expert on the life and
works of a certain fictious son of J.S. Bach! Feuermann's
performances satisfy the senses and soul of the highest order and
PDQ's of the opposite end of the spectrum. Keep us
posted.
Hope all is going well on the tour, musically. I am
looking forward to our own (Utah Symphony) tour of Europe and Russia
in the fall of 2003. The word is that we end our tour in London,
playing a Pops concert with Elaine Page, a favorite of one of our
prime financial patrons. (We are having her in Feb. 2002, as part of
our Winter Olympics concerts, then heading to LA and playing a pair
of classical and a pair of pops concerts with her (3 in Pasadena and
one in Santa Barbara). I wish we had the opportunities to play
internationally a bit more often. It has been since 1986 since we
have been overseas.
Ryan (who loves Feuermann, DQ AND PDQ!)

At my 2nd evening at Keith Harvey's, I met Selma Gokcen. She
mentioned knowing you. Small world, eh?
BTW, the 'new'
Feuermann DQ is from a broadcast concert.

That IS exciting news. I'd like to hear both of those!
When
was that DQ recorded?
A second pervertimento would also be
exciting news ;-)

question
So the disc I have of Feuermann doing DQ live in 1938 (with Death
and Transfiguration also on the disc) is with the NBC? The orchestra
isn't listed on the disc.

To Gary
Hi, Gary,
It is indeed a small world! I met Selma back at
one of the first Cello Congresses when we were stand partners for
the massed cello ensemble. We have had periodic contact over the
years, including her letting me know several years ago about the
sale of Keith Harvey's magnificent Montagnana. I mentioned it to the
management of the USO, on the off chance there might be an "angel"
who would like to make an investment on behalf of the symphony, then
make it available to the principal cellist to play on. (I felt I had
at least three chances of that happening-"fat," "slim," and "none!"
I was right, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?) It would
be a real treat to meet Keith, also. Sounds like he has a Fort Knox
of cello recordings. Perhaps when we (the USO) get to London in
2003.
Great to hear about the upcoming prospects. Any more
previously unreleased treasures featuring Feuermann? Perhaps the
Saint-Saens broadcast?
I do have something for you when you
return stateside. A followup to a previous treasure I shared with
you, but from a far better original source. When do you return? Let
me know so I can prepare your coming home gift!

You're right. The version you already have is from an NBC broadcast
of (I believe) Oct.22, 1938. The BBC broadcast has never been
publicly available and, to the best of my knowledge, has been kept
in storage at the British Sound Archive for all of these years.

question
Also speaking of Feuermann, is anyone aware of any recordings of
the Rococo variations or the Kodaly sonata? To hear him play the
Hindemith or Reger sonatas I always wished there were a Kodaly out
there...and my teacher (O. Cole) tells me he played a great Rococo
too. Just a shot in the dark...??

Rococo
There were never any commercially made recordings of the Rococo
Variations by Feuermann. He DID perform it on the air with an
orchestra conducted by (I believe) Alfred Wallenstein. No trace of
this performance has been found and, in a way, it is a 'Holy Grail'
amongst Feuermann collectors.
