What's the best
ear training system?
The long thread on intonation has got me inspired. I'd like to
start taking an ear training course. I can't seem to find one at a
community college near me, but it seems like the sort of thing that
might work well on a CD or as a piece of software. Am i right? Can
anyone recommend a particular course or software? I'd love it if it
used the sound of a cello instead of just midi keyboard sounds...

I like Practica Musica from Ars Nova.
I
used Version 1.0 when it was Mac only, and I had never heard of an
interval. It now has more bells and whistles, is a little more
expensive, and is still a great product, and just came out in a
Win/Mac version. It comes with a good textbook with basic theory,
and does rhythm training as well as ear training. I think you can
download a demo.

That looks like a very interesting piece of software, Bobbie.
Anyone know how well the PC version works? I'm always suspicious of
programs translated from Mac to PC. They often don't seem to work
very smoothly.

There is a demo you can download and find out. It took them years
(10) to develop a PC version so I think they probably worked it out.
Version 1.0 was pretty much bug-free... later versions have added
features, not fixes.
