Cinncinnati
Conservatory
Dear everyone,
I'm a long time lurker here in cello chat,
but I haven't posted anything in *Ages!* I am now a senior in
high school in the process of applying to colleges, a process I feel
can best be described with one
word:
BAAAAAAAAAAAAURRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
It's
qiute overwhelming. And to top that off, I'm way behind on the
process. I've only found one school I'm actually interested in
applying for: CCM.
I like the location, I love the
facilities, I'm impressed by the skills of a lot of the students I
know who are going there, and the sticker shock from tuition costs
wore off faster than it has for other schools.
The only thing
I don't know much about are the cello professors: Lee Fiser and
Yehuda Hanani. I'm wondering if anyone here can give me any
first-hand information (or gossip.. or anything, really) that I
might want to know before I contact one of them for a lesson or
something. I'm also trying to weigh who might be the better one to
talk to.
So...Thanks!
- Leah -
PS.. if you have
any other suggestions of colleges for me to check out in or not far
from Ohio, I'm open to that!!

RE: Cinncinnati

I don't know either of the teachers there personally, but I've
heard great things about both teachers. I had a friend who studied
with Hanani all through high school and to this day says he's the
best cello teacher he's ever had. And this is coming from someone
who's opinion I respect highly and is probably the most talented
cellist I knew in my school days. I've also known several people
that have studied with Fiser and have gotten alot out of him, but I
mainly know people who studied with him for grad studies. But he's
also supposed to be a fabulous teacher. Oberlin Con. and Cleveland
Inst. of Music are both in Ohio and are great schools. In my
experience, you should apply to places regardless of the price
because most places will give you enough fin aid to go there if
you're accepted, and you might be surprised at the aid you can get.
It's all about having a good mix of schools that you're applying to.
Univ of miami Ohio had Shumway teaching there and he's also supposed
to be a fine teacher and it would probably be a less expensive
school. Good luck! kasey

Re: Cinncinnati

I would say you can learn a great deal from Hanani but need to take
some of his sayings with a grain of salt. Lee Fiser is a very nice
person and has great musical knowledge. He has played a lot of the
20th century chamber repertoire and knows it very well.
Steve
Shumway died recently, I believe. He was an excellent teacher. It
was a shock to see the notice in one of the string magazines a few
months ago.

Re: Cinncinnati

One of my school's cello grad students received her undergrad from
CCM. Then she came here, to Western Michigan University, for her
graduate degree. I asked her what she thought about doing her
undergrad at a conservatory and then coming to a state school for
her graduate degree and she said, had she been able to do it all
again, she would have gone to the state school for undergrad and
conservatory for grad. Something to think about, I
guess.
Might I suggest looking at Western Michigan? We have a
good-sized music school, about 500 students total, both undergrad
and grad. The faculty is excellent and the facilities are
phenomenal. Of course I'm biased, but I don't have any complaints
about the music school or the university in general. There are many
performance opportunities inside and outside of school and these are
open to underclassmen, something you might have trouble finding in a
larger school or a conservatory. If you have questions about WMU,
you can email me or check out http://www.wmich.edu/
