Help -
Fingerings for Beethoven V mvt II
Does anybody have convenient fingerings for measures 98-105 of the
second movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony? I've played it
before, but can't remember the fingerings I finally figured out.

Fingerings for Beethoven V mvt II
I've got a fingering for that passage that is convenient for me,
but it involves a lot of use of the thumb, and most people just look
at me like I'm crazy when I do it. Why - I lost some flexibility in
my left hand from a wrist accident some years ago, and had to
relearn some fingerings. This passage has been among the toughest to
relearn, but my crazy fingering has made it through several
auditions and lots of performances. Email me if you really want to
know how it works.

Re: Help -
Fingerings for Beethoven V mvt II
For me, today, it's:
4124 / 4211 2421 1241 / 2421 2121 1343
/ 4343 1442 3213 / 1413 4134 4142 / 1444 1434 1414 / 1444 1424 1424
/ 1242 1242 1242 / 4
Many cellists don't like crossing to the
A string. A typical thumb fingering to avoid that is:
4124 /
4211 2421 1241 / 2421 2121 1232 / 3232 13t3 t323 / 2t12 3t12 3t32 /
1444 1434 1414 / 1444 1424 1424 / 1242 1242 1242 / 4
Of
course there are personal choices in either of these fingerings
about where to put shifts. (i.e. do you play a four-note scale 1124,
1224, 1244, etc.)
Plus, if your computer dials up the
Pentagon and enters the fingering as code, you start WW III.

Beethoven 5th
2nd movement fingerings
4112 / 4211 2421 1241 / 2421 2121 1343 / 4343/ 1232 3212 /
13(harmonic)13 4113 4142 / 1333 1434 1414 / 1444 1424 1424 / 23t3/
23t3/ 23t3/ 1
In the last full bar, the 2nd finger goes on
harmonic G on the G string.
It's really hard for me to do
this without my cello, but I think this is the fingering that I and
many other Frank Miller deciples use. He always avoided crossing
over to the A string in this passage

Thanks,
folks!
Thanks Zambo, Steve and David. I haven't had a chance to try them
all out, but it looks like I'll have plenty to work on. I would hate
to start WWIII, so I'll just try them on my cello, not the computer.

Re: Thanks,

i use a completely different fingering of the type that makes
people look at me and think i'm from Mars...if you're not queasy
about using the 4th finger BEYOND 4th position or doing string
crossings between D and G strings, let me know and i'll give it to
you finger by finger...maybe you have the problem solved already by
now!

mvotapek
fingerings
It has been really interesting comparing the fingerings I have
gotten so far (four sets, since zambo sent two different sets and
Steve emailed me a .jpg file). There are things that I don't do very
much or try to avoid, but it gives me food for thought and if I
would work on those techniques (like 4-4 shifts), I'm sure I would
find places they would come in very handy. I haven't solidified for
sure which ones I am going to use - probably a combination using
thumb.
I would like to see your fingerings also. I am not in
the habit of using fourth finger very much in the higher postions,
but I am not totally opposed to it either.
This is what I
really enjoy about Cello Chat - everybody trying to help out and
getting different viewpoints.

Re: mvotapek
fingerings
If this is excerpt practice for an upcoming audition, I wouldn't
recommend using a non-standard fingering (like the following) until
you've had plenty of time to try it out for other
people...
starts all on D-string: 4112|4211 2421 1241|2421
2121 1343|4343 1242 3212|4113 4113 4142|1333 1434 1414|1444 1424
1424|1242 1242 1242|4
things worth pointing out: measure
101 big extension between b-flat and d-flat, then string crossing
between g and d strings, using harmonic on the 3rd finger g...1st
beat of both measures 103 and 104 finger flat across the strings for
the interval of a 5th...last measure between A and D strings need to
be ppp, almost non-existent to make up for the sudden use of the A
string.
good luck

Nope, not an
audition
We're performing Beethoven V in October and I am playing first
chair, which is not my chosen spot (3 or lower is much preferable),
but I seem to have fallen into it.
I'm 55 and over the last
30 years have played in 9 different community or university symphony
orchestras and only had to audition once. The conductor of that one
was co-concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony and that was 30 years
ago when I was a little fresher on my technique and I made it in.
The audition requirements were a solo (I played a movement of Bach
Suite #1) and sight reading. They were auditioning Verdi Requiem,
which they were playing that season. Unfortunately, they said, we
don't have a cello part for you to sight read. I said, well, I just
played that last semester at University of New Mexico (which I did)
and that was enough for them. I guess I just got lucky.
Most
of the civic orchestras are glad for warm bodies sitting behind the
cello, and if you can actually tell where you are in the music,
that's a bonus. I don't think I am quite up to any more auditions at
this point in my life, although in certain ways I feel more
confident in my playing than I did back then.
