AVOID THIS CASE!!!
I had just recently purchased a mooradian soft backpack cello case because all I had was a huge bulky hard case and lugging that thing on the EL is horrible! But I wish I had just suffered because now, after a one hour train ride on an unairconditioned train, I've taken my cello out of the bag and noticed that the finish has been marred. The inside of the case is not velvet, it is a nylon type material, and the weave pattern has printed itself all over the top half of my cello! Anyway, I'm heart broken, I've always prided myself on taking top care of my baby... Please, do yourself a favor and NEVER buy this bag.. Does anyone have any clues as to how I would go about getting this repaired? Can a luthier smooth it out for me? And what do you think the chances are of getting this half cocked company to PAY for the damages they have created?

If you want the culprit, here it is.

go to a good luthier
Make sure he/she is a good one. I'm sure they can cure your varnish. Good luck!

Hey, really sorry to hear about your cello. As for getting the company to pay for the damages, it's definately worth a shot, and since (as you say) the case has left a weave pattern on your cello, that proves it was the case that did it, right? Give it a go and good luck!!

Case woes.
This is a horrible thing to happen to your cello. I also had a problem with one of my first cellos when I had new carpet installed in my home. I would always lay my cello on it's side when I would be practicing and right after I got new carpeting, the carpet left a nice imprint in the side of my instrument. I took it to my repairman and he said that the carpet is a petroleum product and it will contain a fair amount of active chemicals when it's new. The older it gets the less this is a problem. Now the carpet is years old and doesn't cause any problems. My new Winter case also caused a bit of marring where the suspension pads sat. I kept the cello in a silk bag for several months and then disregarded the silk bag and haven't had a problem since.
Watch out for new fabrics and materials!!!!!

excellent soft case..
I have a Reunion Blues softcase, which costs as much as some less expensive hard cases. But I was cello-shopping yesterday and neither of the cellos we wanted to try fit into one of my hard cases (the Winter) so I suggested putting my old one into the Winter and the less expensive trial cello into the softcase. The luthier was reluctant until he saw the case, and then said that a Reunion blues case was no problem; it is the Cadillac of soft cases, and offers plenty of protection.

Re: excellent soft case..
Do you have anymore information on this case? Does this company have a website? For all those care, I called the company and they said that they would "refund" me for the cost of the case...I told them that I would need to contact my insurance company first, then I would get back to them. I don't know if I'll ever get them to pay for it, but maybe my insurance company can give me some clues.

Thanks,
Dan

Check out http://www.cellos2go.com/ Reunion Blues has a website but they don't sell directly. It took awhile to get mine (not from Cellos2Go; they unfortunately did not exist at the time and I dealt with a much less reputable company) so if you order make sure it is in stock. I think Discount Strings carries them, too.

Re: Reunion Blues...endorsement!
I have been quite happy with my reunion Blues case for two years, and the cello has survived nicely in it despite the hazards offered by NYC subway traveling. Only caveat regarding this case...there is the possibility of wear around the edges from the reinforcing seam piece they put in. The erosion is slow and steady...I didn't notice it until it was relatively severe, and while one can have a luthier revarnish the edges, better to just sheathe the instrument when carrying it with a tee shirt or coverall of some sort. But it protects pretty well indeed, and the bow pocket is ample enough to hold a bow carrier. The music pocket is super-sized, will take anything.
