audition for
community orchestra
Tonight at 9 p.m., I'm auditioning for the Frederick Community
Orchestra in Frederick, Md., and I'm petrified and terrified. I
haven't auditioned in 20 years, and I'm not quite sure what's going
to happen. This is an advanced amateur orchestra, not a professional
group. My scales stink, mainly because I just recently acquired
my scale book, and haven't really had a chance to memorize any of
them. I'm not entirely sure how my sight-reading is going to
go.
What happened was I inquired about the auditions, with
the hope of auditioning next year, and they talked me into
auditioning this year. The orchestra manager seems to think I stand
a chance, but I'm not so sure.
I majored in cello performance
in college, but quit after my sophomore year, and just started
playing again last November. I was pretty good, but I'm still
finding my feet again after such a long hiatus.
Then again I
might just surprise myself and make it.

Re: audition for

I wish you the very best of luck. I "sharpened my 'teeth'" there.
When that orchestra was first started, a little over 50 years ago,
it was the Hood-Frederick Community Orchestra. I started my
non-school orchestral (career) there on cello in the HFCO's
"inaugural" rehearsal (I was also a violinist in my HS orchestra at
the time), which culminated in a performance of Handel's Messiah
with the combined choirs of Hood College (then a "girl's' school)
and the Naval Accademy (then a "mens' school). No auditions were
required then. The performance filled the (then) Frederick HS
auditorium so far past overflowing that speakers were set up outside
for the overflow (and it is only socially appropriate to add) and
attending minority population to hear. Fifty years ago Maryland was
definitely a southern state.
Previously the community and the
college had each had their own musical groups, no more than about a
dozen each, but when they combined they wre immediately about 40
stong, since they attracted new musicians from other places,
including Hagerstown. The concertmistress (that's what we called
them then) was a young Hood student and wonderful violinist who had
studied with Persinger. Of course to me, in those days, she was an
"older woman."
Any orchestra holding auditions should let you
know what is required.

what's
required
When I called they said a would need a solo piece and might be
asked to play a scale. And I would need to sight read
something.
I only had three days to prepare though. Since I
wasn't planning on auditioning, and they talked me into it.
I
also haven't seen my teacher since March. My lessons don't start
again until October. So I'm on my own.

Good luck - and remember if it doesn't go well you can always try
again later when you feel better prepared.

Hey, if you get in, and you probably will, be on the look out for a
pair of french horn players I used to work with (well, by long
distance). Gary Smith and Tina (whose last name escapes me). Both
are really nice people and very, very smart. It's been about 3 years
since we worked together and at that time both were orchestra
members.

Sounds like they need cellists, and I bet your audition will go
fine. Tell 'em your background, that you're currently studying, etc.
That's what I did when I auditioned a couple years ago for my
community orch., after not having played for 9 years. The audition
went OK, they were pleased to hear I was studying and figured my
chops (such as they are) would come back, so...
Good
luck!
