practicing in
apartments
Hi everyone,
I know there have been threads about this
before, but I could still use some advice. I have recently finished
school, and am about to move into Chicago. Now that I'm out of my
school's practice rooms, I am concerned about annoying my neighbors
in my new apartment by my practicing (anywhere from 2-5 hours a
day). I plan to of course be polite and not play extremely early in
the morning or late at night. Still, I worry that excess noise like
sound resonating through the floor via the endpin will distract my
neighbors downstairs (this was a problem in an old
apartment!).
Does anyone have any ideas about something I can
put on the floor to reduce noise, or any other advice? I have a
practice mute, but don't want to use it unless I really need
to.
Thanks!

A nice heavy rug may help. I have carpeting in my apartment and my
downstairs neighbors say they can't even hear me play. But it's also
a nice old Victorian building. Also try to find out where the
downstairs neighbor spends most of their time, and don't practica
above that room.

Oops, I just posted a not-entirely-unrelated question up above. I
*did* do a search on "mute" before posting but apparently there are
still problems with the search engine :-) We'll see if I get any
responses.
One thing to check into is whether you can access
practice rooms elsewhere even if you're not a student. I know for
many schools it's students, or students and faculty, only, but I
remember on one of the other boards someone mentioned that he could
use the practice rooms at the local CC for free as long as there
wasn't a wait list, which there never was. Certainly not as
convenient as practicing in your own apartment, but for especially
long practice sessions might be worth hauling yourself over
there.

Practicing....
Hi, I dont know where in Chicago you moved to, but if you are
near DePaul or some other school, you can probably use their
practice rooms whenever you want from what I have heard.
Best
wishes.

Also try local churches. Many of them will let you practice,
especially if you offer to give performances in return. My cello
teacher meets all her students in local churches, and in return
performs at one service per month.
I think she really enjoys
the exposure too!

chicago city
noise regulations
I also just recently moved to chicago, and I had a sour neighbor
that didn't like my playing.. (I didn't like her techno music
throbbing me at 3:00am, but oh well) and she complained to the
landlord who in turn told her that as long as I did not sign a lease
saying that I wouldn't practice I had until 10:00 to play as loud as
I pleased. Now, out of consideration (a new neighbor moved in), I
never practice past 9:00 anymore, but at least it's there. But my
new neighbor likes my playing!
Good Luck, Dan
