"Covered Parts"...
Tell the truth, now! When you've got
a terrifically difficult cello orchestral part, and you are covered
up by the brass, etc., do you really try hard to play it exactly
right?

Absolutely. You don't always
succeed, but you always try.

If we didn't have integrity in the
CSO, we'd never have to play ANYTHING right!!
(only a
'slight' exaggeration from the Slidemaster)

Gotta play all the parts, all the
time. It's impossible to draw a line as to when it's okay to fake
and when it's not. So the answer is to not fake. (Do as I say, not
as I do!) Plus, even in "covered" passages, the clarity, resonance,
etc of the passage work creates the background sound for the louder
voices.

You'd actually be very surprised as
to what people can really hear clearly in the audience. There have
been times I've prodded through a piece, thinking that my part was
just an underlying sub- structure to what I thought was a main
melody in the violins or brass, that I could barely hear myself
over, then people who listened would later tell me how wonderful
that little question-answer counter melody we'd played sounded so
nice over the orchestra!...I could've let it slip a little, but I'm
glad I didn't, that would suck.
