Cellos
I am looking for a cello in the
price range from 1500 to 2300 dollars. I know this is the low end
for cellos but think im getting ripped off right now. Any help is
appreciated. Thank You.

Re:
Cellos
Ifshin of Berkeley has a German
cello in this price range which is pretty decent. Also, try
Cellos2Go and Stringworks, both of which have good reputations.
Also, if a shop is selling you a new cello, try to compare the
prices with discount shops on the internet. It is reasonable for a
local shop to be more expensive, but not twice as expensive. I think
your best buy is a pre-owned cello, but it can be hard to find one.

The
"eBay"
You may find at www.ebay.com for
some celli for auction. I have seen a GLIGA VASILE 4/4 MAESTRO CELLO
there with a first bid price of US$1,600. It seems
great.
Hope the information is helpful.

Having tried out several lower
priced cellos, I now got a Maestro from Stringworks- it's a new
line, chinese, and has an excellent sound. Now it is $1600, but I am
told the price will go up. And they are good people to deal with.

Re:
Cellos
I paid $2500 for my Van Aue German
made student cello. I like it quite a bit. I tried four of them
(same model - that is "identical") and one didn't impress me much at
all and the other two were OK. I liked this one much more.
A
former fellow student had a Doetsch. It sounded very nice to me.
However, I heard "rumors" that they can vary a lot from instrument
to instrument and that the way in which they were constructed meant
they wouldn't last a long time. It was a luthier who wanted to sell
me something else telling me this . . . so keep that in mind. I
believe this cello cost about the same as (or a little less than)
mine.
I don't like to be ripped off either. I tend to buy
mail order when I can. But with something that is as personal,
quirky, unique, etc., etc. as a cello . . . I don't mind paying
more. I got more. I got a practice room a fist full of bows, several
cellos, and when I brought it back because the action was too high .
. . it turned out the neck angle was off. They re-aligned it (no
small project) . . . for free.
