Cataloguing a CD collection
Does anyone have or know of a
computer programme I can use to catalogue a large personal CD
collection, so thatI can access for instance all the different
interpretations I have a of a given concerto/piece by
composer/performer etc.?

I have never used it personally but
Microsoft Access has a canned dbase template for CD's which is
probably decent, as well as many other templates.

Re:

I use a piece of software called
"Music Find Pro" that is fairly good. It also has the CDDB feature
that will connect through your internet connection to a database of
CDs and download information about your CD. You just put the CD in
the CD ROM drive of your computer, load the program and then click
on the CDDB button and it connects to the CDDB and downloads the
information about the CD, including track listings. There are many
classical CDs that have been cataloged on the CDDB website. It
really saves a lot of time to not have to input all this
information. The software also has custom fields that can be created
so that you can organize and search for the information you want to
find. The software is only $12 and you can download an evaluation
copy as well from:
www.dlcwest.com/~sorev/musifind.htm
Any
software upgrades are free once you have paid the intial $12. I have
found the author to be helpful in working out details as
well.

Re:

I have a friend who swears by a
Filemaker pro template - it's even portable on his palmpilot.
Personally I've never bothered trying to catalog things - it
might be possible if you only have a few hundred things, but once
the cd's have filled the shelfs in the hallway, and the lp's and
tapes are still collecting by the thousands, there's no hope of
getting it all listed, unless you have a year or more to kill. I
seem to average 12-50 acquisitions a week, so there's no hope of
getting caught up, let alone alphabetized.

Thanks Terry for great information,
I shall certainly follow up your suggestion. It seems amazingly
cheap for what you say it does....?! Thanks
