bloch
suites
Is anyone familiar with Bloch's
three suites for solo cello? I love playing Bloch's "from Jewish
Life" pieces for cello and piano, and think that they even sound
beautiful unaccompanied - very sad, soulful melodies. I haven't
heard the solo suites; are they similar? Is there one you would
recommend over the others? Any notable recordings of these pieces
that I should be aware of?
Thanks for your
input!

Re:

There does not seem to be many
recordings of the Bloch Suites currently available. I have an older
AAD CD with Rama Jucker Cello and Robert Zimansky piano that I
recently bought on e-Bay, because, like you I was curious to hear
these pieces. If you are looking for vintage Block, alla the "Jewish
Life" pieces (Prayer) these suites are not it. The music was
composed a few years before his death in 1959. The following is a
short review of the currently available CD "Bloch Works for Cello"
with cellist Peter Bruns and Rogit Ishay piano from Amazon.com. The
cello music is readily available as well, should you decide to try
them.
"Amazon.com Once past the Impressionist-influenced
works of his youth, Ernest Bloch's music is typified by two major
strains--emotionally direct reflections of his Jewish heritage and
an American-tinged modernism, often affected by neo-classicism and
his lifelong devotion to Bach. Both of those musical paths are
evident in this well-recorded disc of Bloch's cello music,
brilliantly played by Peter Bruns. He fully captures the unbridled
emotionalism of the Jewish pieces, inflecting the plaintive, soulful
melodies with cantorial melismas, ably partnered by pianist Roglit
Ishay. The three Suites, mature pieces from 1956-57, are tougher
works, technically demanding and structurally complex. Bruns's
playing here is stunning. He brings structural clarity to them,
along with tonal and rhythmic variety and breathtaking technical
wizardry. In the process, he rescues them from the fringes of the
repertory. An outstanding disc! --Dan Davis"
Hope this
helps.

Thanks, Terry! I think I'll have a
listen before I order the sheet music. Sounds like it might not be
the type of Bloch I'm interested in. Oh
well...
