Playing Bach's Chaconne on the cello

Has anyone played R. E. Bockmühl's version of Bach's Chaconne (from Partita in d minor for solo violin)? He wrote it to Charles Davidoff.
I'm starting on the Dvorák concerto after I've played Saint-Saëns and I thought that Chaconne could be a great way to improve my intonation. It's very difficult, but it's mostly about having a big hand so that you will be able to play the B-G-F# chord...it's soooo big...:eek You're supposed to play B on the g string with 1st finger, G on the d string with 2nd finger and F# on the a string with 4th finger...! I can do it, but not in a very comfortable way...:)

I don't have the music for that, so I may be way off base here, but couldn't you use thumb-1-3 for that chord?

That piece is GREAT, though I can imagine it being somewhat of a nightmare to play on cello!

Chaconne
Yes, I thought of that fingering to, but then it becomes so much more difficult to play the chord before and after...:(

It's very fun to work on! :)

This might sound a bit wacky, but I've heard come cellists play the bottom two notes and then shift up for the upper 2 notes. It doesn't sound that bad, but it's not something I would have automatically thought of.

Listen to Rostropovich's Saraband from the 6th suite.

where can I get it?
Where can I find this arrangement.... who is the publisher etc..... I think it could be a lot of fun, and a BIG challenge to play this on cello.

It says "Verlag von Otto Forberg in Leipzig" in my music, but I've never heard of them before...maybe it's out of print...:(

If you want me to send you a photocopy, please send me an email at smoberg@hotmail.com

I have Lazlo Vargas version of this. It's a monster piece to attempt. I tried once attempting it in sections, but I never got the first few section up to snuff, so I backed away from it.

I keep telling myself over and over again in the practice room "This MUST be easier than the Prokofieff, op. 125 - This MUST be easier than the Prokofieff, op. 125"...:)

The cello quartet version by Varga is fun if you get a chance to try it. :)

Don't kid yourself - the prok is a snap, in several respects, if you can pull off the chaconne well.

Get it here...
You can download all the violin sonatas and partitas arranged for cello here:

www.gmd.de/Misc/Music/scores/

They are in Post Script format so you need to have a proper reader to print them out.

Varga's transcription is very thoughtfully done and practically edited. Probably one of the less expensive publications, too. He publishes his own things at Musicelli and they are now carried by Shar.

Re: Playing Bach's Chaconne on the cello
I ran across the following Brahms quote about the Chaconne last night. Thought it was interesting and somewhat timely for this discussion. I am no music historian. Am curious as to when Bach started to be revered as he is today. I was under the impression it did not happen within his lifetime.

"The Chaconne is in my opinion one of the most wonderful and most incomprehensible pieces of music. Using the technique adapted to a small instrument the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I could picture myself writing, or even conceiving, such a piece, I am certain that the extreme excitement and emotional tension would have driven me mad."

Re: Playing Bach's Chaconne... and SPAM!!
Did anyone else in this thread receive a spam from a Andrei Pricope soliciting the sale of the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas for cello? I'd just like to know so I can report him to his ISP. And if he's reading this he should know that he will be reported.

The problem everyone's having with the pop-ups and now that I'm receiving spam are making this board less enjoyable. :(

Victims of "spam", please read...
Dear cellists:

I apologize if your sensibilities were offended by my emails concerning the availability of transcriptions of the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas at http://www.amati.net/. By the way, I was offering FREE copies of these, not soliciting.

I guess I thought that if our community can take unsolicited pop-up ads and members promoting performances (requiring admission), CDs (not free), etc, we could also stomach announcements in response to an intriguing topic/request. Oh, well, I was wrong - maybe we should continue discussing doughnut varieties...

Once again, I apologize.

Worry not, the affected emails have been deleted from my contact addresses. May I suggest that you keep your email on ezboard private if you don't want anyone to contact you?

Re: Victims of "spam", please read...
My problem is not with not with your attempt to inform people that you have copies of these available for people interested. If this is indeed the case, why not state it directly on the board as do the others that you've mentioned? Instead you decided to email the information directly to the people in this thread. The pop-ups are simply a non-issue to me as I disable JavaScript on my browser. As for the Shameless Self-Promoters, they are doing that in a very public way and if I do not want to see that I'll simply stop checking this forum. I do not have that choice if someone is emailing it directly to me. This is what the state of Illinois has to say on the subject, which is, I believe, where you are located:

www.spamlaws.com/state/il.html

The reason that my email is not "private" on this group is so I can be contacted by people who may need a clarification on something I may have typed or need to get into contact with me for some other reason, not to have someone try to sell me something.

Now here, I may have to apologise. I *did* read that you were willing to send the Chaconne free of charge and that the second edition will soon be available. The wording of the email makes it seem that you are indeed trying to sell the rest of the sonatas and partitas though.

May I suggest that you only email those that request information from you. There are people out there that are more feral about this issue than I.

Greg
