Re: Bengtsson

I think Bengtsson's bio actually said that he gave the premiere in
Denmark. He did perform it with Walton conducting in Manchester way
back when, however.

Hmmm, yes, that makes sense. I'll need to check my "underground"
video again, but Piatigorsky's performance was televised and Sargent
conducted and I believe the announcer referred to the performance as
the first on that side of the Atlantic. (The world premiere was in
Boston with Piatigorsky and Munch.)

Re: Bengtsson

As we know, Bengtsson was closely associated with Piatigorsky,
having been one of his early students and apparently a very good
friend; so maybe the piece is somehow connected with both of them?

Isn't it amazing how many fine cellists studied with Piatigorsky? I
recently learned that Raphael Wallfisch also studied with him.

...and, (dare I say it?), Christine Walevska - who became
Piatigorsky's student when she was all of 13, and according to her
bio was the first person he actually taught privately, as opposed to
through one of those august institutions.
