Thumb
questions
With the recent thread in thumb position, I thought I'd add in
another question. I don't know if anyone else has dealt with this
(my teacher finds it extremely odd that I do this) but whenever I
have to hold down the string with my thumb, my knuckle caves in (the
knuckle closest to my hand.) I don't know how to stop this, and it
makes playing in thumb extremely difficult. I've experimented with
different hand angles, and it seems that no matter what I do that
knuckle pops in. I've tried playing and then stopping to push the
knuckle back out, but a few notes later it collapses again. I have
no idea what I'm doing wrong. (My pinky also does this, but at the
knuckle closest to the nail. That, however, doesn't seem to affect
my playing.) Please, if anyone has any suggestions,(I don't care how
insane they are) share them!

Re: Thumb
questions
Your thumb needs to be strengthened. Then your hand won't collapse.
Everyone's left hand does this aty first.

both me and my
teacher have this problem
I'm lucky, since my teacher has the same problem, she wasn't
surprized by that at all. Just use your finger to push it back out.
If you can only play a few notes, you just have to keep stoping and
starting until your hand builds strength. If you're like me, that
part of the problem will fix itself quickly. The callouses on the
other hand -- ouch!
I just got the Mooney thumb position book
and so far really like it. The songs are kinda dorky, but they are
easy hear intonation wise so you can learn quickly.
Still
struggling with the thumb,
Jane

Use cork from
champagne bottle
hi!
try playing with champagne bottle cork between your
thumb and index finger, in the "nest". then your fingers will form a
nice looking "bridge". of course the problem lies in that your
strenght is going the wrong way - your weight coing through the
knuckles and not being transferred into the fingertip- make sure
that you use minimum strenght for making the string sound - so there
is minimum risk of collapsing.
good practising, sasha
