Never get MMR or
tetanus in your right arm.
Just a word of warning: If you have to get a tetanus or MMR
injection, like I did yesterday, DON'T LET THEM STICK IT IN YOUR
RIGHT ARM! My arm is completely immobile and I was supposed to have
had a cello lesson today. Aaargh.

Let me try
again!
Laura raises an excellent point, and I'd like to add another note
of caution. If you ever have surgery and are going to be completely
unconscious, make sure you check with the surgeon about arm
restraints! Sometimes the doctors will tie your hand or arm in an
awkward position in order to give them better access, but this can
have catastrophic consequences to a string player! I was worried
about this when I had surgery for Thoracic Outlet syndrome last
year, and I made sure that my arms would be down by my sides. A
number of musicians have had their arms injured from unrelated
medical procedures. Our own former assistant principal had his
shoulder injured when he had a kidney operation. And I believe that
the violinist Robert Mann had some sort of mishap with his right arm
due to a reaction to some kind of shot. Laura, I've always had
the tetanus shot in the left arm, but it always aches for several
days. It's probably better than the right, but not my much. Thanks
for bringing up such an important topic. Jon Pegis

On a totally
different subject-Amer.Cello Congress
Are you at or going to go to the American Cello Congress at U of
Maryland? I thought it started last night for congress attendees,
while the Leonard Rose competition performers began a few days ago.
If you or any of our other ICSers are there, give us a running
account of the happenings.

I wasn't able to attend because of summer classes (believe me, I'd
rather be Congress-ing).

Re: Let me try

I always have bad reactions to immunizations, and because of
left-handedness usually get them in my right shoulder. Bad idea this
time: I spent all day yesterday with a 102 temp and no
cello!
