John Rutter Requiem
This is the newest thing we're working on in symphony chorus. It's to be on our summer concert with guest conductor Anton Armstrong.

I immediately noticed what appears to be a beautiful cello solo in the second movement, "Out of the Deep". Anyone played it? What do you think?

I've played it, years ago, and even enjoyed it. Certainly the cello bits are worthwhile, though to me the piece has a kind of pop feel for a sacred piece.

I've played that a couple of times. It is a beautiful cello solo. There's a smaller chamber version and an orchestral version, the solo's the same in both.

I've played it twice and really liked that movement, though it also scared me because certain choral conductors aren't very easy to follow (and certainly don't listen to cellists).

It's a nice solo though, that's for sure. :)

I've played it twice, once under Rutter! How bad can it be if it starts and ends on a nice open C? Anyway, Rutter is not the best of orchestral conductors; I think he is more of a choral director.

HI Bob,

I too have played this and various other works by Rutter with the composer conducting at Carnegie Hall serveral times. Do you by chance know Dr. Virginia-Gene Rittenhouse?

I've played the solo too. Love that Blues-y feel. Rutter is a very nice person and a great composer (IMO).

I certainly do know Dr. Rittenhouse. She is quite bizarre!! My wife and I went to the small college that she taught at for a semester, then quit as quickly as possible. We then played on and off for her for a few years after that. My wife also played for Rutter with the Brooklyn Phil. How long ago did you play for Rittenhouse?

Re: Rutter
Hi Bob,

I've known Dr. R since 1993 and have a very warm place in my heart for her and what she does for young musicians. It's true that what she does deviates a great deal from what normal professional musicians would consider standard operating procdedures, but if you can see beyond that, you'll recognize that she is incredibly gifted as a violinst (she still plays very well even in her 70s) and pianist. But her true hiden gift is her composition. Have you ever heard any of her music? I think she studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Her music is very interesting as well as beautiful.

I taught cello in Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD while back in the early 90's for a while. Is that where you and your wife studied? Or did you study at AUC?

Fascintating!

Hello Paul,
I haven't heard any of her compositions; she really is gifted. I saw her do some pretty nasty things to folks who weren't as talented. We went to AUC; a tough place to be if you are not Adventist, which my wife and I aren't. Boy, did we travel a lot, and our sight reading improved mightily. ONce VGR announced during a concert that my wife was going to play a specific concerto. She hadn't told anyone about this before, and didn't even ask Lydia if she knew it!!! Fortunately, she did. : )

If you would like to continue this discussion, we should email so we don't take up boardspace on an exclusive topic.
