Re: Here's a
weird question for you all!!!!!
I always thought these naming cello threads were silly until I got
my new cello. It has a Rodolfo Fredi label - a mystery that someone
would chose to fake a Fredi but whatever - the label's in there. Had
it been a Fredi it would have been worth 3xs what I paid for it.
When all was said and done and it was found to truly NOT be a Fredi,
I just had to call it Fred. I refer to it with all masculine
pronouns. It...I mean, 'he' insisted I call him Fred. What could I
do?

I like Emma, too. Very nice name.
I also like Alexis, Charlotte, Emily, Antoine, Ruthie, Esther,....
(hmm, all girl names.)

Re: Cello name
suggestions
You know, Andrew Victor has a cello that we all call "the beast"
or, I believe I've also heard, "the monster"... and there's a
perfectly good reason for it! It is a beast to play with most bows,
and also, it roars! I mean, it's about as loud as a jackhammer
compared to just about any other instrument.
So,
tell us about your cello, then maybe we can help with suggesting
names...
I,
personally, haven't been compelled to name my cello. Hmmm... wonder
what I'd call it if I were...

The
"beast."
True, I have a Car Sandner cello sometimes refered to jokingly as
the "beast." But generally I refer to an instrument by the name of
the maker - and if necessary - the number the maker gave it. It
works and avoids causing later psychological scars to an innocent
violin, viola, or cello.
Andy
P.S. Laura, I do prefer
to think of the "Sandner's" sound as more like a trombone than a
jackhammer - at least with the right bow. Am I missing something?

No names
I refer to my cellos as A, B and C. I never found a reason to give
these inanimate wooden contraptions names - they're just tools I use
to get the end product (somewhat unromantic, but Hey, thats me). And
which ones are B and C varies occasionally. And the 7 cases don't
have names either, besides Annoying and In the way. Bows are
referred to as the wood one, the fiberglass one, and the carbon
fiber one (the various bad ones don't even get referred to ever).

Is your cello a
"his" or a "her" ?!?
Well, the idea of naming a cello points out a new silly question
: is your cello a "guy" or a "girl" ?
For me, my cello is
definitely a male. Maybe I just see the cello as I imagine the
"perfect man": warm, powerful, romantic ;-)
(I should say
thay to my psychologist some day ;-)

Re: Is your

Well, I see my cello as female, most days that is. It depends wot
mood I'm in. I just think it is quite a feminine instrument.
I have decided to definitely keep the cello (I only got it on
Saturday) and I don't know much about it. I DO know that it was
made in Beijing (China) by people who were trained to make cellos in
Germany. I was thinking of finding the Chinese or German word
for "Tranquility" or "Peace" or "Music" or "Romance" or soomething
like that to name my cello.....any idea of wot they are??? I think
the Chinese language is more beutiful than German (no offense meant
to anyone) but I like both.
Help is appreciated in finding
these words (and pronunciations!!!)

Re: Here's a
weird question for you all!!!!!
I named one of my first cellos "Lou" after Louigi Boccherini. It
was sentimental since I bought the cello around the time I was
learning the Bb concerto and felt like there were a lot of
coincidental connections between me, the piece, and finding the
cello. Anyway, I had that cello for a while and now, 7 years later,
friends and relatives who I never realized were that interested in
it still speak fondly of Lou. I guess I had a lot of feelings for
the instrument and talked about it a lot.
Now I'm trying to
find a name for my new cello that's as easy going and character-rich
as Lou was. See, it was a nice feeling to be lugging Lou over the
turnstyle in NYC while encouraging him along, "Come on, Lou". In
fact, I probably said that to my cello more than anything - "Come on
Lou," and "Well, Lou, here we go!"
Boy or girl? I think my
new cello is definately a boy... a MAN in fact, wheras I thought Lou
was more like a teenager. Just not as mature. So I'm trying to think
of a good American name for him, because he is
American.
That's my scoop. Call me crazy! - Parker

ROTFLMAO!!
My
grandmother keeps telling me that I should name my one-year-old
tangerine tree, especially now that it's in a huge pot now. I
thought of Susie or Susan or something, for the tree, who said
something that was unmistakeably a resounding NO. Way too
undignified, not treeish or pointy enough.
I
would think that most celli are female; anyway, the shape of a cello
is the stylized shape of a woman, isn't it?? But then the cello is
an incredibly gorgeous, expressive, intuitive, artistic instrument,
and that certainly doesn't have to mean feminine.

what's in a
name?
I have a name for my cello. It is based on its sound quality. But I
don't feel comfortable sharing it. It's kind of silly and very
personal, though I feel it is very appropriate. A fellow cello
chatter helped me name it after hearing my cello. I was thrilled
with the name and it's evoked in our conversations.
Sorry to
be so vague!

HAHAHA
comparison retracted
You are absolutely right - a trombone is a MUCH better comparison
than a jackhammer! I just meant it is LOUD! Don't get me wrong,
though. I love the beast. And I
surely hope the dear thing recognizes the affection and admiration
with which I ever called it by that name.

My cello is unnamed as of yet. I'm still thinking. But she's
definitely female! And moody!!!! Wow, what pms. Not really
obviously, just some days we get along better than others. Right now
she's resting up for the big concert this weekend. Hope she makes it
through, hope I do.....

Re: Here's a
weird question for you all!!!!!
This cello defininetly has a male aura to it. "His" name is BRUGG -
you must roll the "R" when you say his name. I named him after his
birth place - liked the sound of it. He's voice is huge and I love
feeling his 18 wheeler-like rumble on the lower register.
My
boys wanted me to name him, Carbulo - captivator of souls. They
found that gem in a role playing game.
